Folkehøgskolen Sørlandet er en kristen folkehøgskole i Birkeland i Birkenes kommune i Agder. Skolen tar årlig imot vel 130 elever. Skolen eies av Normisjon, Indremisjonsforbundet og Norges KFUK-KFUM.[1]

Folkehøgskolen Sørlandet ble startet opp under navnet Sørlandets Kristelige Ungdomsskole i 1912 av fire misjonsorganisasjoner, Indremisjonskretsene for Landsindremisjonen og Vestlandske indremisjonsforbund, Agder krets av Norges kristelige ungdomsforbund og Sørlandets kristelige ungdomsforening. I 1970 skiftet skolen navn til Birkeland Folkehøgskole[2] og fra 2010 heter skolen Folkehøgskolen Sørlandet.

Historie

Interessen for å få til en kristelig ungdomsskole på Sørlandet hadde begynt å gjøre seg gjeldende straks etter 1900. Den kristne ungdomsskoletanken ble drøfta i misjonskretser både i Aust- og Vest-Agder i tida framover. Høsten 1910 var planene om en slik skole i Vest-Agder kommet så langt at det ble innkalt til et møte i Kristiansand. På dette møtet skulle det tas stilling til spørsmålet om å starte en ungdomsskole i den gamle skrivergården i Oddernes. Det mislyktes. Etter det møtet begynte misjonsforeningene i begge Agder-fylka å samarbeide om å reise en kristelig ungdomsskole for hele Sørlandet. Det resulterte i at ei forberedende nemnd med medlemmer fra Aust- og Vest-Agder ble valgt til å komme med grunnregler for skolen. På en ekstraordinær generalforsamling i Arendal 24. januar 1912 ble grunnreglene enstemmig vedtatt.

Etter en del debatt ble det vedtatt at skolen skulle ligge på Birkeland i Birkenes kommune, Aust-Agder fylke. Skolen tok til i leide lokaler 1. oktober 1912 med 52 elever. Bernt Nordset fra Klæbu i Trøndelag var skolens første rektor (1912–1915). Han la grunnlaget for undervisningsforma og samfunnslivet på Birkeland Folkehøgskole. I hans tid ble det første skolebygget, Fridheim, bygd. En av ildsjelene bak oppstarten av skolen var Terje Anderssøn Mørland, som også ble ansvarlig for oppføringen av det første skolebygget. Mørland satt også i styret for skolen i en år-rekke.
