Orecchio di Dionisio

Ear of Dionysius (italiensk: Orecchio di Dionisio) er en kalksteinshule hugget ut av Temenites-høyden ved byen Syracuse, på øya Sicilia i Italia.

Innvendig i hulen

Det er 23 meter høyt og strekker seg 65 meter innover i en "S"-form, det smaler inn mot toppen. Det skal være den italienske maleren Michelangelo da Caravaggio som har gitt det navnet når han i 1608 malte hulen. Både fordi det utseendemessig ligner formen på det menneskelige øret og for den ekstremt god akustikk, som får en liten lyd til å resonere gjennom hele hulen med et ekko på opptil 16 ganger.[1]

Hulen er menneskeskapt, den ble gravd ut i gresk-romersk tid som en del av vannforsyningen til Syracuse. Først ble det laget en smal tunnel som senere ble utvidet nedover og sidelengs til å lagre vann, noe som ga det den uvanlige formen. Et jordskjelv som rammet området fikk det til å rase ut og det ble ikke lenger mulig å lagre vann her.[2]
