1950-årene

Rumenske frimerker fra 1950-årene til minne om Sputnik-programmet, som markerte starten på romkappløpet.

1950-årene var et tiår som varte fra 1. januar 1950 til 31. desember 1959. I kjølvannet av andre verdenskrig fortsetter verden å stabilisere seg. Det europeiske kull- og stålfellesskap, forløperen til Den europeiske union, oppsto i starten av tiåret.[1] Warszawapakten ble inngått i 1955, etter at Vest-Tyskland ble anerkjent som en suveren stat og sluttet seg til NATO.[2]

Flere kriger og opptøyer forekom, inkludert Koreakrigen (1950–1953),[3] oppstanden i Ungarn (1956)[4] og Suezkrisen (1956).[5] Sovjetunionen og Storbritannia utvikler atomvåpen,[trenger referanse] og førstnevnte sender opp den første menneskeskapte satelitten, Sputnik 1.[6]
