Famn

Famn er ei gammal eining for lengd eller eit mål for ved. Med ein famn forstår vi i dag til vanleg ei lengd på om lag 1,88 meter eller ein vedstabel på 2,4 lauskubikkmeter.

Famn som lengdemål

Ein famn var ei lengd på tre alen, eller 1,882 meter. Famn vert framleis brukt av eldre fiskarar som mål på sjødjupn og lengd på fiskereiskap.

Famn som vedmål

Ein famn ved var opphavleg ei vedmengd som målte ein famn i breidd og høgd, medan lengda varierte ettersom ein selde alenved eller langved.

Då meterkonvensjonen vart innført i 1875, vart det bestemt at ein famn alenlang ved i metrisk vedmål skulle vere ein stabel 2 meter brei og 1,85 meter høg av 6 desimeter lang ved.

Ved kongeleg resolusjon av 25. juni 1936 vart det bestemt at ein famn ved skulle måle 2 m x 2 m x 1 m (4 m³), medan

  • ein lakterfamn måler 2 m x 2 m x 2 m = 8 m³
  • ein storfamn måler 2 m x 2 m x 3 m = 12 m³
  • ein småfamn måler 2 m x 2 m x 0,6 m = 2,4 m³

Etter Norsk Standard NS 4414 (1997):

  • Ein famn ved skal måle 4m x 1m x 0,60 m eller 2 m x 2 m x 0,6 m og tilsvare 2,4 lauskubikkmeter (lm³) stabla ved.
  • Ein famn kappa i 30 cm lengder tilsvarer ca 3,3 lm³ ved som ikkje er stabla.
  • Ein storfamn ved er 2 m x 2 m x 3 m lengd.

Ved sal av kappa ved skal ein ikkje gjere fråtrekk for mellomromma mellom dei enkelte vedstykka. Derfor vil ein famn 60 cm ved innehalde om lag 1,6 m³ fastmasse.

Loven innførte omrekningsreglar til det gamle systemet. JInternasjonal tomme definert etter SI-systemet. I Noreg vart einingane alen, kvart, tomme og famn brukt. Fot, linje og skruppel vart nesten ikkje brukt.
