Tolsum is een buurtschap in de gemeente Waadhoeke, in de Nederlandse provincie Friesland. Het is gelegen ten noordoosten van Lollum en zuidwesten van Tzum. De bewoning ligt aan de Slachtedijk en bestaat anno 2024 uit een aantal boerderijen in de polder Vlaren, dat in het dorpsgebied van Tzum is gelegen. Op wat van oorsprong een grote terp was, aangeduid als Groot Tolsum, staan twee van de boerderijen.

Geschiedenis

De buurtschap dankt enige bekendheid aan de in 1914 gedane vondst uit de terp van een schrijfplankje uit het begin van de eerste eeuw. De tekst – die de oudst bewaarde geschreven tekst van Nederland is – handelt over een schuldverklaring van een slaaf, genaamd Carus aan een onbekende schuldenaar.[1] Er werden ook andere vondsten gedaan uit de terp. Zo werden in 1910 gebruiksvoorwerpen uit aardewerk, terra sigillata en geometrisch versierde vaatwerk gevonden. Ook werd er een 18 en halve centimeter lang beeldje van de god Mars gevonden, evenals een fragment van een beeldje van de godin Fortuna.

In een kopie van een 10e eeuwse document uit 1150-1158 werd de buurtschap vermeld als Tollesheim. In 1433 werd het vermeld als To Tolsum en in 1664 en 1718 als Tolzum. De plaatsnaam verwijst waarschijnlijk naar het feit dat een woonplaats (hem/heem) van of opgericht door de persoon Toll(e).

In 1406 werd de state en stins, een verstevigd huis, Tyaerds State genoemd. In 1429 zou de state in het bezit zijn van de familie Herema, van de stins werd dan niet meer gesproken. In 1511 werd gesproken van de zate De Kleine Goudberg, een naam die anno 2024 voortleeft in de boerderij aan de Slachtedyk, waar vermoedelijk zowel de oude state als stins zouden hebben gestaan, los van de bewoning op de terp. Bij Tolsum stond verder enige tijd een molen die aangeduid werd als 'Polder Vlaren'. Deze molen, een spinnenkop dateert uit de 19e eeuw en werd 1928 gesloopt.
