Dengan nama kod Operasi Backhander, pendaratan pasukan AS merupakan sebahagian daripada Operasi Cartwheel yang lebih besar, di mana strategi Pihak Berikat di Kawasan Pasifik Barat Daya dan Kawasan Lautan Pasifik pada tahun 1943–1944. Ia merupakan pendaratan kedua Divisyen Pertama Marin semasa itu, selepas Guadalcanal.
