종로동(鍾路洞)은 서울특별시 종로구의 행정동군이다. 종로1·2·3·4가동과 종로5·6가동이 있으며, 종로1·2·3·4가동은 법정동 종로1가, 종로2가, 종로3가, 종로4가를 포함한 주변 지역을 포함하고 있으며 종로5·6가동은 법정동 종로5가, 종로6가 및 인근 지역을 포함하고 있다. 두 동이 관할하는 지역을 종로라고 부른다.

역사와 유래

한성부는 처음부터 조선 왕조의 도성의 역할을 하기 위해 계획 도시로 건설된 곳이다. 종로 또한 계획적으로 만들어진 도로였다. 조선시대의 종로는 영조척(營造尺)으로 폭 56척, 양옆의 수구(水溝)는 각각 폭 2척의 넓이로 이루어졌다.

처음에는 특별히 붙은 이름이 없었으나, 조정에서 공인을 받은 여섯 군데 큰 상점인 육의전이 있어 사람들이 구름처럼 많이 왕래한다는 뜻으로 ‘운종가’(雲從街)라 불리었다가, 나중에 종각이 설치된 이후 시간이 지남에 따라 ‘종로’라는 이름으로 바뀌었고 그것이 지금에 이르게 되었다.

세종대로[1]가 정치적 중심 지역이었던 것에 반하여, 종로는 육의전(六矣廛)을 비롯하여 많은 상점들이 분포하였던 상업지역이었다. 종로는 동서를 횡단하는 도성 내 간선 도로였으나, 조선 후기로 오면서 도로변을 잠식하는 가건물 및 상점들이 늘어나 도로 폭이 점차 줄어들었다고 한다. 이러한 현상은 현재까지 지속되어 양품점·서점·제과점을 비롯하여 동대문시장까지 분포하는 대형 상업 지역을 이루게 된 근간이 되었다.
