1996년 아프리카 네이션스컵은 남아프리카 공화국에서 1996년 1월 13일부터 2월 3일까지 개최되었다. 원래는 케냐에서 열릴 예정이었지만 케냐가 개최권을 반납함에 따라 남아프리카 공화국에서 열리게 되었다. 남아프리카 공화국이 첫 번째 우승을 차지했다.

 이 부분의 본문은 1996년 아프리카 네이션스컵 예선입니다.

본선 진출국

1 나이지리아는 원래 전 대회 우승국 자격으로 본선에 자동 출전할 예정이었으나 나이지리아 축구 연맹은 대회 개막을 앞두고 선수들의 안전을 이유로 불참을 결정했다. 이러한 결정은 넬슨 만델라 당시 남아프리카 공화국 대통령이 사니 아바차가 이끌던 나이지리아 군부 독재 정부가 인권운동가 9명을 처형한 것을 비난하는 입장을 표명한 것에 반발한 나이지리아 정부의 영향력이 작용했다는 해석이 나왔다.[1][2][3] 이에 따라 아프리카 축구 연맹(CAF)은 나이지리아에 1996년 아프리카 네이션스컵 참가 자격을 박탈하는 한편 1998년 아프리카 네이션스컵 출전 금지 처분을 내렸다. 또한 아프리카 축구 연맹은 기니가 나이지리아를 대신하여 1996년 아프리카 네이션스컵에 출전시킬 계획을 세웠으나 성사되지 않았다.[4]
