地理

中央道（英語版）が通り、首都ハバナから約460km東、カマグエイから約110km西に位置する。最寄の港は南南西約24kmのフカロ港で、カリブ海のアナ・マリア湾に面する。

歴史

1840年、シエゴ・デ・アビラ市が建設された。人口は263人だった。

1868年、第一次キューバ独立戦争が始まった。

1869年-1872年、スペイン軍がキューバの東西を分断する為に、トロチャ・フカロ・モロン防衛線（英語版）を築いた。これにより、最前線で交通の要所であるシエゴ・デ・アビラの重要性が高まった。

1877年、市政府が設置され、モロン（英語版）市から独立した。

1878年、第一次キューバ独立戦争はキューバの敗北で終わった。

1976年、カマグエイ州からシエゴ・デ・アビラ州が分離し、シエゴ・デ・アビラは州都になった。
