『THE BALLADS』（バラード） はEPO初のバラード・アルバムで、自身の楽曲だけでなくカバー曲も収録された作品。初版は1989年12月10日に発売され、1993年3月1日に再発売された[2]。発売元はDear Heart / MIDI。

概要

帯コピー：心を込めたベスト・シング! シンガー、EPOのエターナルなバラード・アルバム

タイトル通り、スローなバラード曲を集めた作品であり、アルバム未収録シングル「白い街 青い影」、最新シングル「ふたりのメロディー」を収録。『VITAMIN E・P・O』収録の「五分遅れで見かけた人へ」は別アレンジによるリメイク・ヴァージョンとなっている。他にも、山下達郎のアルバム『FOR YOU』収録曲「LOVE TALKIN' (Honey It's You)」のカバーや、リチャード・チェンバレンが1963年に発表し後にカーペンターズがカバーしてヒットさせた「遙かなる影」(原題:（They Long to Be）Close to You) のカバー、佐々木幸男のシングル曲「セプテンバー・バレンタイン」のカバーなどが収録されている。

編曲のほとんどを、ロンドン在住（当時）のプロデューサーでソングライターのDANNY SCHOGER[3]が手掛けており、楽曲のプロデュースも担当している。

1993年3月1日には再発盤が発売された[4]。

批評

音楽情報サイトCDジャーナルの商品ページでは、「エポのすずしげな歌声によるバラード集はポップ性を持っている曲によって構成されていながら、せつない心持ちになってしまう。鼻柱の強い女ばかりのポップス流行りだったこの頃、エポは全くその反対の女性を感じさせる不思議な歌声を聞かせていた。」と紹介されている[5]。
