40ヤード走

40ヤード走（40-yard dash）とは、アメリカンフットボールの選手が持つスピード及び加速力を40ヤード（36.58m）走ることで評価する指標の一つであり、NFLスカウティングコンバインのテスト項目である。

概要

純粋なスピードが求められるポジションであるランニングバック、ワイドレシーバー、ディフェンシブバックは、このタイムが重要視される。コーナーバックは敵のワイドレシーバーと正対した状態で走るため、バック走（英語版）のタイムが重要視される[1]。

手動によるストップウォッチでの計測では0.25秒単位の誤差が出るため、現在ではレーザー光線が張られた40ヤードラインからエンドゾーンまでの純粋な通過タイムを計測する。

「40ヤード」という距離はパントキックの平均距離に基づいて決められており[2]、4.5秒（40ヤードラインからキッカーが蹴ったボールが地面に着地するまでのタイム）を切るとランニングバック、ワイドレシーバー、ディフェンシブバックはNFLコンバインの平均だといわれている。

電気計測が採用された1999年以降のNFLコンバイン公認歴代最速記録はゼイビア・ウォージーが記録した4.21秒(2024年)である[3]。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

1999年以前の記録として1986年ダレル・グリーンの4.09秒、ボー・ジャクソンの4.12秒(4.13秒とも)などが有るがいずれも非公認記録であり、陸上のクリスチャン・コールマンが電気計測で4.12秒を記録したと主張しているが非公認記録であり、記録も下記の通り疑問視されている。

Reel Analyticsによると40ヤード走測定における歴代最高速度は2022年に歴代3位の4.23秒を記録したKalon Banesの25.1mph(40.39Km/h)である。 ゼイビア・ウォージーの歴代最速タイム4.21秒における最高速度は24.41mph(39.28Km/h)[4]であり、タリク・ウォーレンが記録した40ヤード4.26秒における最高速度の24.8mph(39.91km/h)のみならずBo Meltonが記録した40ヤード4.34秒における最高速度の24.5mph(39.43km/h)にも劣るなど、40ヤード走は競技性として40ヤード区間においていかに速く移動するかであり、純粋なスピードも必要だが、それよりも瞬発力や加速区間の適正が必要な種目である。そのため下記の通り、より長い距離で競う陸上競技との一定度の相関はあれど全くの別競技と言える。

陸上の短距離種目との相違点

世界レベルの短距離走選手はスターターピストルが鳴ってからスタートするまでに最低でも0.24秒以下のリアクションタイムが求められるが（リオ五輪100メートル準決勝時の山縣亮太のリアクションタイムは0.109秒[5]、同五輪100メートル決勝時のウサイン・ボルトのリアクションタイムは0.155秒）[6]、アメリカンフットボールの40ヤード走のスタートのタイミングは選手個人に任されており、陸上のスタート時のようなリアクションタイムは求められない。

40ヤード走はNFL独自のテスト項目であり、国際陸連が定めた陸上種目の中には存在しない。特に上記の様にスタートの方法が全く異なる事や加速区間の適正の違いにより、40ヤード走で好記録を収めた者が陸上の短距離種目で好記録を出せるとは限らない。また陸上選手はリレーの為に40ヤード走のスタートに近い3点スタートの練習をしているものの、歴代上位で大学フットボールと短距離種目を兼任していた選手は多くないなど短距離種目が速いからといって40ヤード走で好記録を収められるとも限らない。また20歳時に走り幅跳びで8.33mで全米選手権を優勝してロンドンオリンピックに出場して10位(予選1位通過)など走り幅跳びで活躍したMarquise Goodwinの記録した4.27秒[7]が下記の100m強豪選手を上回るなど一概に短距離種目を専門とする選手がNFL選手や他の陸上種目の選手より優れているとも言えない。

NFLでも有数の俊足であるワイドレシーバーのJacoby Fordは2010年のコンバインで4.28秒を記録しており、2024年現在では1999年以降のNFLコンバインの歴代14位タイ（NFLコンバインはあくまでドラフト候補生の計測であるため、単純な走力で呼ばれる訳ではない為に一概に歴代最速クラスとは呼べない）、クレムゾン大学時代での60メートル走のベストタイムは6.51秒を記録しているが、2024年現在で世界歴代72位(コンバイン電気計測導入の1999年以降では歴代59位タイ)の記録。[8]

またNFLのワイドレシーバーで100メートル走の自己ベスト10.00秒であり大学時代NCAA100mで優勝したTrindon Holidayは、2010年のNFLコンバインで4.34秒を記録しており、2024年現在では1999年以降のNFLコンバインの歴代94位タイで、60mのベストタイムは6.54秒を記録しているが、2024年現在で世界歴代160位(コンバイン電気計測導入の1999年以降では歴代124位タイ)の記録[9]。

2007年にジャスティン・ガトリンがNFLにワイドレシーバーとして挑戦した際、40ヤード走はワイドレシーバーの平均と大差ない4.42秒であった。NFL挑戦が失敗した後に、カナディアン・フットボール・リーグのトライアウトで手動計測かつスニーカーで40ヤード4.25秒を記録したとされる。

2017年に100メートル走9.79秒、60メートル走6.34秒の世界記録保持者である短距離選手のクリスチャン・コールマンは、NFLコンバインと同様の測定法でNFL最速記録の4.22秒を上回る記録である4.12秒を出したと主張している[10]ものの、主張した動画で使用している計測器のタイム表示を映さなかったり、当時のコールマンの60mの自己ベストは6.45秒であり、60mの自己ベスト6.44秒（NFL挑戦時は6.48秒）の2022年世界陸上100m準優勝のMarvin BracyがNFL挑戦した時の40ヤード走4.30秒[11]である為一部からは記録に疑念が向けられている。

2019年に100メートル走9.58秒の世界記録保持者である元短距離選手のウサイン・ボルトがスーパーボウルのイベントに参加、当時のNFL最速記録ジョン・ロスに並ぶ4.22秒を記録している[12][13]ものの、ボルトはスパイクでない上に比較動画ではジョン・ロスに圧倒的に遅れをとっており[14]、上記のコールマン同様に一部からは記録に疑念が向けられている。

2024年に100メートル走9.97秒で60メートル走6.57秒と日本記録に近い記録を持つコール・ベックがバージニア工科大学のプロデイで40ヤード4.28～4.32秒を記録したものの手動計測であるためにコンバイン方式では4.4秒前後になると見られる。

2024年に100メートル走10.09秒に対して60メートル走6.51秒の序盤型スプリンターのKalen Walkerが大学フットボールの試合におけるハーフタイムにおいて一発勝負の計測で40ヤード4.15秒を記録した。しかし上記のJacoby Fordのタイムや、大学フットボールや陸上短距離種目を兼任しており100メートル走10.16秒に対して60メートル走6.54秒を記録しているWalker同様の序盤型スプリンターでもあるJordan Anthonyの40ヤード走の人生の自己ベストが4.27秒[15]であるなど、一発勝負でなく人生の自己ベストだとしてもWalkerの計測した40ヤード走4.15秒は非現実的なタイムである。この計測は室内では無く屋外の計測であった為に風の影響や、60メートル走などでみられる室内記録に対して屋外の計測でタイムが優れてる現象、もしくは計測機器の違いなどいずれも計測方法に差異によって生じたものとみられる。

40ヤード走の非公認記録

ダレル・グリーンは1986年のワシントン・レッドスキンズのトレーニングキャンプにおいて4.09秒を記録しており[16]非公認の史上最速記録と目されている。また40歳の時に4.24秒を記録しており、50歳の時に4.43秒を記録している。

ボー・ジャクソンはオーバーン大学時代に4.12秒及び4.18秒を記録したと主張している。[17][18][19]

マイアミ・ドルフィンズのJakeem Grantはテキサス工科大学時代の2016年にニューオーリンズ・セインツのスカウティングコンバインで手動計測ながら4.1秒を記録している。[20]

ディオン・サンダースは1989年に4.27秒を記録している。[21]

元陸上選手でラグビー選手のカーリン・アイルズはNFL挑戦に失敗した2013年にデトロイト・ライオンズのスカウティングワークアウトで4.22秒を記録しているものの[22]、2019年に自身のXで手動計測ではないが助走付きの測定方法である事を公表している。
