Tyrannoraptora è definito come il clade che contiene "Tyrannosaurus rex, Passer domesticus (passero domestico), il loro ultimo antenato comune e tutti i suoi discendenti".[2] Il clade venne nominato nel 1999 dal paleontologo americano Paul Sereno, anche se nel suo concetto originale Tyrannosauroidea era il sister taxon di Pennaraptora.[3] Da allora, le analisi filogenetiche hanno scoperto che il gruppo comprende anche Compsognathidae, Ornithomimosauria, Alvarezsauroidea e Therizinosauria.[4][5][6] Quindi i tyrannoraptorani sono divisi in tyrannosauroidi e maniraptoromorfi.
