Si tratta di un nome teoforico biblico, portato dall'arcangelo Raffaele, presente nel libro di Tobia[1][2][3][8]; deriva dall'ebraico רָפָאֵל (Rafa'el)[3], composto da rapha ("egli ha guarito") e da El ("Dio")[1][9], e il significato può essere interpretato come "Dio ha guarito"[1][3][5][6][8][9], "Dio è il guaritore"[2], "medico di Dio"[4] e via dicendo. Il significato potrebbe fare riferimento all'episodio biblico, in cui Raffaele cura dalla cecità Tobi, il padre di Tobia[5][6][8].

Il nome ha goduto di buona diffusione in varie parti d'Europa (eccettuata l'Inghilterra)[3] a partire dal Medioevo, grazie proprio al culto dell'arcangelo[1][5][6]. In Italia è ben attestato in tutta la penisola, specie in Campania, con numerose varianti[1][6], la maggioranza delle quali (Raffaelle, Rafaele, Rafele, Raffele, Raffale, Raffaelo, Raffello) sono però desuete[5]. La forma "Raffaello" è predominante in Toscana[1][5] e il suo femminile, "Raffaella", ha superato in diffusione l'originale "Raffaela" grazie soprattutto alla popolarità acquisita da Raffaella Carrà negli anni 1970[1][6].

Onomastico

L'onomastico ricorre generalmente in memoria dell'arcangelo Raffaele, festeggiato assieme a Michele e a Gabriele il 29 settembre[8][10].
