La Pentapoli aurunca era una federazione di città fondate dall'antico popolo degli Aurunci[1]

Descrizione

Le città appartenenti alla lega erano Ausona, Vescia, Minturnae, Sinuessa e Suessa. Tuttavia su localizzazione ed appartenenza esistono varie controversie.

Durante la guerra latina le città della lega, al pari dei Volsci e dei Campani, sostennero i Latini contro Roma e i loro alleati Sanniti. La guerra, combattuta tra il 340 a.C. e il 338 a.C., si concluse con la vittoria dei romani.

Le città della Lega commbatterono nuovamente contro Roma durante la Seconda guerra sannitica che ebbe inizio nel 326 a.C.. Nel 314 a.C. i romani vinsero le città della Lega che furono completamente distrutte, ma successivamente fondarono le colonie di Sessa Aurunca e Minturnae, città che conservavano il nome e pressoché la posizione di quelle degli Aurunci.

  1. ^ Ancora discusso se Aururnci e Ausoni fossero due popolazioni simili appartenenti all'etnia osca o due diverse denominazioni, Ausoni in Greco e Aurunci in Latino, per indicare la stessa popolazione.
