NGC 3442 è una piccola galassia a spirale situata nella costellazione del Leone Minore, a una distanza di circa 97 milioni di anni luce dalla nostra Via Lattea.[1]
Scoperta
La galassia è stata scoperta il 25 marzo 1884 dall'astronomo francese Édouard Stephan.[1]
Descrizione
NGC 3442 ha una classe di luminosità I e presenta una larga riga a 21 cm dell'idrogeno neutro.[2]
Il nucleo di NGC 3442 presenta emissioni nell'ultravioletto, per cui è stata inserita nel catalogo di Markarian con la designazione Mrk 418 (MK 418).[3]
Gruppo di NGC 3396
NGC 3442 fa parte del Gruppo di NGC 3396. Questo gruppo di galassie comprende almeno 11 membri: NGC 3381, NGC 3395, NGC 3396, NGC 3424, NGC 3430, NGC 3442, UGC 5898, IC 2604, PGC 32631, UGC 5934 e UGC 5990.[4]
