La diocesi di Kigoma (in latino: Dioecesis Kigomaensis) è una sede della Chiesa cattolica in Tanzania suffraganea dell'arcidiocesi di Tabora. Nel 2021 contava 599.390 battezzati su 2.606.000 abitanti. È retta dal vescovo Joseph Mlola, O.S.S.

Territorio

La diocesi comprende la regione di Kigoma in Tanzania.

Sede vescovile è la città di Kigoma, dove si trova la cattedrale di Nostra Signora della Vittoria.

Il territorio è suddiviso in 30 parrocchie.

Storia

Il pro-vicariato apostolico del Tanganica fu eretto il 27 settembre 1880 con il decreto Cum Reverendus della Congregazione di Propaganda Fide, ricavandone il territorio dal vicariato apostolico dell'Africa centrale (oggi arcidiocesi di Khartoum).

L'11 gennaio 1887, in forza del breve Quae catholico di papa Leone XIII, cedette porzioni di territorio a vantaggio dell'erezione del vicariato apostolico di Unianyembé (oggi arcidiocesi di Tabora) e del vicariato apostolico del Congo superiore (oggi diocesi di Kalemie-Kirungu), e contestualmente fu elevato al rango di vicariato apostolico.

Il 31 luglio 1889 e il 18 luglio 1932 cedette altre porzioni di territorio a vantaggio dell'erezione rispettivamente della prefettura apostolica di Nyassa (oggi arcidiocesi di Lilongwe) e della missione sui iuris di Tukuyu (oggi arcidiocesi di Mbeya).

Il 10 maggio 1946 in forza della bolla Quo maiora di papa Pio XII cedette una porzione del suo territorio a vantaggio dell'erezione del vicariato apostolico di Karema (oggi diocesi di Sumbawanga) e contestualmente cambiò il proprio nome in vicariato apostolico di Kigoma.

Il 25 marzo 1953 il vicariato apostolico è stato elevato a diocesi con la bolla Quemadmodum ad Nos dello stesso papa Pio XII.
