Carlotta d'Asburgo-Lorena (nome completo: Charlotte Hedwig Franziska Josepha Maria Antonia Roberta Ottonia Pia Anna Ignatia Marcus d'Aviano von Habsburg-Lothringen; Prangins, 1º marzo 1921 – Monaco di Baviera, 23 luglio 1989) nacque come arciduchessa d'Austria, principessa reale d'Ungheria e di Boemia. Fu la penultima figlia dell'ultimo imperatore d'Austria-Ungheria Carlo I e di sua moglie, l'imperatrice Zita di Borbone-Parma. Per matrimonio divenne duchessa consorte di Meclemburgo-Strelitz.

Biografia

Carlotta nacque a Prangins in Svizzera, dove la famiglia imperiale austriaca viveva in esilio in seguito al crollo della monarchia austro-ungarica dopo la prima guerra mondiale. La sua famiglia visse in vari paesi durante l'esilio: dopo aver lasciato la Svizzera si trasferirono nell'isola portoghese di Madeira, dove il padre Carlo I morì un mese dopo che Carlotta festeggiò il suo primo compleanno. Carlotta in seguito si stabilì in Belgio, prima di lasciare l'Europa per gli Stati Uniti d'America per sfuggire al nazismo. A causa dell'invasione tedesca nel 1940 la famiglia fuggì in Canada, dove Carlotta studiò economia e scienze sociali all'Université Laval[1] di Quebec City. Nel 1943 l'arciduchessa Carlotta iniziò a lavorare nel quartiere di Manhattan's East Harlem, utilizzando il nome di Charlotte de Bar[2]. Nel maggio 1956, Charlotte si fidanzò con Giorgio, duca del Meclemburgo e capo della Casa di Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Si sono sposati con rito civile il 21 luglio 1956 a Pöcking, Germania, ed in seguito con una cerimonia religiosa quattro giorni dopo[3]. Suo marito Giorgio morì il 6 luglio 1963, dal loro matrimonio non nacquero figli. L'Arciduchessa Carlotta, morì a Monaco di Baviera quattro mesi dopo la morte della madre Zita[4].
