Allsherjarþing S.þ. að störfum.

Allsherjarþing Sameinuðu þjóðanna er ein af sextán helstu stofnunum Sameinuðu þjóðanna (S.þ.), þar hafa öll aðildarríki jafnan rétt. Hlutverk allsherjarþingsins, sem er skilgreint í kafla fjögur í Stofnsáttmála Sameinuðu þjóðanna, er að: ákveða fjárútlát fyrir S.þ., kjósa hina tíu meðlimi Öryggisráðsins sem ekki hafa fastasæti, fara yfir skýrslur frá öðrum undirstofnunum S.þ. og samþykkja ályktanir.

Allsherjarþingið kemur saman einu sinni á ári. Þingið hefst þriðja þriðjudag í september og varir fram í desember. Sérstök þing er hægt að halda á öðrum tímum ársins og neyðarfundi eftir því sem þörf krefur. Þinginu stýrir forseti, sem kosinn er af aðildarríkjunum á ný á hverju ári, eða aðalritari S.þ.

Þegar kemur að þýðingarmiklum málum, það er málum sem varða: heimsfrið og öryggi, kosningu til öryggisráðsins, kosning meðlima í efnahags- og félagsmálaráðið, inntaka nýrra meðlima í S.þ, afnám til bráðabirgða á réttindum og sérréttindum, sem fylgja þátttöku, brottrekstur meðlima og mál varðandi fjárhagsáætlanir þarf ⅔ hluta atkvæða til samþykkis tillögu. Eins og áður hefur komið fram hefur hvert aðildarríki eitt atkvæði. Í öðrum málum nægir meirihluti.
