Hey there. Thought I would ask you a quesdtion about HOW one creates a new category? The reason is that I have FINALLY been able to get lists together on what specific towns in WV belonged to specifc coal fields. Ergo, WHY NOT have a category that states town x, belong to the coalfield Y. By the way, for future reference you make a new category in the same way that you make a new article, except the only content that you actually put in while editing is the categories that category belongs to (and in some cases the category's main article, though that's not necessary in most cases). Hey there, I have a doozy of a style question for you. I am at this time delighted to have created a Coal town article and an approved article on Coal Scrip. BUT, since the archetype structure in a coal town is, The Company store, I was , CONCERNED because, I was redirected to the Truck System. In a coal town, you went to the store, it did evolve into a type of truck system because, there was nothing else for miles around, kind of well remote. I think the current redirect is a total political POV which is a valid discussion but fails to define what the Company store was. It would be fabulos to have that as a part of an article, but I have no wish to revisit grad school and discuss post structuralist socialist arguments that made academics feel great while my family worked to death in a coal camp. SO, in keeping with the neutral POV which I would like, what would be the proper and nice way to say, hey, we will have a new article here and can we have the politics a part of an article the defines what a Company Store was?Coal town guy (talk) 12:19, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can see how the article got redirected. In anywhere where other stores would or could exist, such as company towns in urban or less remote rural settings, the company store primarily existed as part of a truck system so the workers would have to buy their goods there. Coal towns are a special case since they were so remote, though, and the company store was the only store that would have existed in the area. Of course, based on the coal scrip article, the coal companies set up a truck system anyway (possibly to keep other stores from opening, but that's another discussion). Of course the company stores did have other functions in coal towns (which you probably know more about than I do), but since the only thing the coal town stores seem to have had in common with all other company stores was that they were part of a truck system, it might be better to mention the other functions in the coal town article rather than to start a company store article. It would be worth starting a company store article if we had enough information about all types of company stores/towns, but someone would have to do quite a bit of research about the other types of company towns before starting the article to keep it balanced, and even then it still wouldn't be worth starting if most of the other company towns only had stores to support a truck system. Hey- Quick question. In all of the articles I am creating in KY and WV, I am noticing a number of edits by a person removing United States as they state Having Hazard County, Kentucky, United States, makes USA Superfluous and then they tell me about a standard. Thats cool, WHAT standard? I have requested the standard or its location and the "reply" is more edits. Personally, I do not mind the edits. However, its piss poor form to transmit an edict and then not bother to give a reference or direction because I need to either "suck it up" or "figure it out". If it were me, I would try as your example has shown as well. SO, in the effort of assuming good faith, do you know where this reference is? MUCH appreciated. I've ran into this issue in multiple forms in the past. There are certain editors who will either delink United States from the first sentence of community articles, or remove it entirely. The policy for delinking is usually WP:OVERLINK, which says major geographic features should not be linked; I disagree with the policy in this case, but consensus is probably against me and I don't feel that it's worth debating. I've never seen the policy which says that the United States should be removed entirely from lead sentences, though, and I think it's a bad idea. Adding United States is helpful for foreign readers who don't know all of the states, especially for the less prominent states such as KY and WV. I'd rather work on more productive things than get into a fight over it, but as far as I know there's no policy or good reason for removing United States/USA from the lead. Hi I came across Providence, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina at the dab page of Providence, North Carolina. This is an odd one. Both entries are pointing to roughly the same area and are probably referring to the same place. The only problem is that place is now well within the Charlotte city limits and is no longer an unincorporated community. Based on the number of places called "Providence" in the area I suspect it's either a neighborhood or at least has some history as an independent community, but I unfortunately can't find any sources to back that up. I personally do not think that these links should be in the title when they can be put into an external links section. The KML links are in the title for the same reason coordinates are in the title; it provides a quick link to the map so readers don't have to read through the entire article to see where the route is. WikiMiniAtlas sort of does the same thing, but since it doesn't label other roads (or a whole bunch of other features) and has no satellite coverage, the other two links are going to be more useful for most people. (Granted, it would be nice if there were more mapping options like there are for coordinates, but I don't know how technically feasible that is.) The original research shouldn't be an issue now that you added the other reference. Based on what the tagger said at his talk page, the neutrality issue seems to be over the word "monopoly". Personally I think that's nitpicking a bit, but it would probably be best if you could find a source that uses the word monopoly to describe the system. I managed to scour out a reference for the opening of the Howard station while going through the microfilm at the Evanston public library. The only downside is that it says something to the affect of "[the station] is now open" and doesn't give a specific date. The article was in the paper published August 29, 1908. I'd like to ask for your comments on the proposed merger of the recently created South Side Elevated (CTA) into Green Line (CTA). This was done by the same user who created the Ravenswood branch article that was merged into the Brown Line article. Looking at his user page it looks like he's preparing to create two new articles which would really be sub articles of Green Line and Red Line (CTA), neither of which are developed enough to have such pages. I tried explaining to him that we don't create sub pages like that until ready for them, but he either doesn't understand or doesn't care. He also created an article (since speedily deleted) on a fictional Gold Line of his own devising. I ask for your assistance because he seems to be becoming quite irate. Hi-I came across Sinnipee (also Sinipee) in Grant County, Wisconsin. It was a community near Dubuque, Iowa in the 19th Century before it disappeared. I think Lock and Dam #7 flooded whats left of Sinnipee (Sinipee). The Sinnipee Cemetery is whats left of the community and that is in the GNIS. GNIS spells it as Sinnipee; the Wisconsin Historical Society spells it Sinipee. Several ghost towns website lists Sinnipee, Wisconsin as a ghost town. All of the inbound links to the article used that name, so I assumed it was his common name and used it as the title. I have no objection if you want to move it; I was having a hard time deciding which name to use as the title myself, as I'm not terribly familiar with Arabic names. Fine by me, though I should note that the Olympics weren't terribly good about handling non-Western names. They never used diacritics, and there were a few countries (Mongolia comes to mind) where they did a terrible job of Westernizing the local names. There's not a perfect way to do that, but category intersection tools are probably your best bet, so you can see which pages are in both a category about a state and Category:All articles lacking sources. This tool works well for me; here's an example search I did so you can see how it works. It can get some extraneous results and it doesn't work for WikiProjects, but it's probably the best option. There are also categories like Category:Unreferenced Kentucky articles, but these are severely underused (the Kentucky one only has four articles in it). Since the area which was Darwin is now part of Madison and appears to be developed, I'd redirect that one to Madison for now since I can't find any other sources about it. Hey- MANY thanks for the cross cat query as I have rescued a few articles for certain. BUT, I have a question. MANY articles with zero references are listed as being in a neighborhood. In other words, at one point this place was its own entity and then over time, it got sucked into a larger neighborhood or rather, defined as being in a neighbohood. GNIS does not provide any data oin this. Many had their own PO etc etc

It probably depends on the community to a certain extent. I've seen some articles where unincorporated communities were called neighborhoods by mistake, but there are also some where a nearby city annexed the community. The Census Bureau shows city boundaries on its reference maps (go to the "Reference maps" section here and once the map loads check "2010 place" under "Boundaries and Features"), which might be helpful (though their site can be irritating to use in my experience). Ah, I see what happened here. Louisville's government merged with Jefferson County's in 2003, so all of the unincorporated communities in Jefferson County technically became neighborhoods of Louisville. So if the GNIS says that the place is in Jefferson County, you can just cite that because it means it's a neighborhood of Louisville too (even if the GNIS still says it's unincorporated - they're not always good about updating stuff). I also found this map of Louisville neighborhoods, which only seems to cover Louisville's original neighborhoods but should still be useful.

As an aside, consolidated city-county governments in rural areas are really annoying to deal with. The counties usually have former unincorporated communities that are still notable, but they don't always have navboxes if they're small counties, so you have to be careful that articles don't get orphaned. Hey- Quick question. There was a place in WV named Take in Hollow. GNIS states this as a place but not populated. It was, by folks we called Hollow dwellers. I have pics of folks who lived there in their homes at that place and a moden sign showing a road that takes you there. However, I suspect, an article on this place would be original research. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be much about the community online (besides your website, of course), but there's probably enough to at least start an article. I've found a couple of newspaper articles which mention it (apparently there was a shooting there in the 50s), so there shouldn't be a problem with verifying that it was a community. The problem I have is I can't pin down its location. The maps I've found only show Take In Ridge, Take In Creek, or Take In Hollow Road, all of which seem to extend from Sullivan to somewhere northeast of Whitby. Via research and public record, it turns out that one of the first recorded settlers of Raleigh County WV was Alexander Halstead. He is buried at the Halstead cemetery at Whitby WV. I can't find much coverage of Alexander Halstead himself, so he probably wouldn't be considered notable enough for his own article unless you have sources about him that I can't find. Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide/Task forces explains a lot about task forces and how to set them up. The one thing I would caution you about is to make sure you can find other editors who would be willing to join the task force. A whole lot of task forces and even projects have gone inactive, so you really would have to be careful to make sure this one doesn't fizzle out. I wouldn't recommend starting it until you have found a decent number of interested editors. I'm also not entirely sure which project it would be a task force of; WikiProject Cities doesn't seem to do task forces, and it wouldn't fit entirely under any of the geographic ones. That's quite the name. Hi-I am looking up information about Mapleworks (Maple Works), Wisconsin which is a ghost town near the village of Granton, Wisconsin in Clark County[2] Orangemike asked me to research this. I would do the article but there is no GNIS. Also there is a book about Wood County, Wisconsin of which I have used and there were mention of lumbering communities like Scranton, Wisconsin, etc. that are no longer in existence. Coalguy and I had talked about Wisconsin's logging/lumbering industry and the fact there were communities that sprung up and then died. You can included lead mining. I found this book of Clark County history, which has some info on Mapleworks. The GNIS often doesn't have entries for ghost towns, and I don't know of any general sources for these sorts of places; my advice would be to write an article with the sources you have if you find out about a ghost town, even if we don't have the coordinates yet. Hey, take a look at Kalaupapa, Hawaii

These folks have an active post office (got their postmark at my home just a few weeks ago), tours etc etc and a set population. Sure, its a leper colony and one of the very very few if only populated leper colonies in the US. Now, I am ok with ghost towns. I have lived in some former towns which are worthy of webster/wiki ghost towns, virtually no population, NO post office and certainly a "tour" would be a drunken bet. According to the article on ghost towns, a ghost town does not have to be uninhabited. See Virginia City, Montana, and Scenic, South Dakota has, or had, an open post office in 2011. However, its population has significantly decreased, and the economy is dependent on tourism. "Civil" is just a GNIS classification for any kind of administrative government division. In this case, it was probably a water supply district, though I can't say for sure. I'm not sure what the proper classification for it would be in the infobox, though. Buena Vista in Carroll County has to be the one with the post office, especially since it's the only one near Jackson. The Buena Vista in Blount County is within Maryville and probably isn't notable. Buena Vista Estates appears to be part of Nashville, though it's hard to say since Nashville and Davidson County have a consolidated government. It's in a suburban area with a bunch of new-looking subdivisions, though, so even if it wasn't part of Nashville proper before the consolidation it probably doesn't have much of a history or identity. Okay-please take a look at the Oneida, Wisconsin article; the GNIS number: 1583863 is for the the Town of Oneida not the community. The community GNIS is: 1570830 and has the community in Brown&Outagamie Counties. Part of the community is in the town of Oneida in Outagamie County; the other part is in the Village of Hobart in Brown County. That gets complicated since Hobart, Wisconsin is incorporated. I updated everything in the infobox for Oneida so it refers to the community rather than the town. As far as it being in two counties, as of 2000 Oneida was split between the town of Oneida and the town of Hobart, at least according to the Census Bureau's map. After Hobart incorporated, half of Oneida became part of Hobart and half was left unincorporated, so Oneida is now both a neighborhood and an unincorporated community. I'm fine with leaving the introduction the way the article has it now, though I'd also be fine with putting a bit more emphasis on the part in Hobart. According to the articles in Progressive Men of Montana and the WPA Montana book, first there was Ubet: a stage stop in what was then Fergus County, and is now Judith Basin County, with its own post office (for which Augustus Barrows came up with the name "U-Bet"). Later there was a station opened a few miles away, initially called "Ubet" after the famous stage stop, later renamed "Garneill"; and then another train station, initially called "Ubet" for the same reason, later renamed "Judith Gap". According to the coordinates for the Ubet Cemetery, Judith Gap is about 4.8 miles from where Ubet used to be. Don't get confused by the fact that Fergus County has been split up several times: Judith Basin was formed from western Fergus County in 1920, after Ubet had apparently withered away with the passing of the stagecoach era, and Wheatland was created about the same time, in part from Meagher County (where Barrows' original Sawmill Gulch was located). Given that Judith Gap seems to have taken the ecological niche which Ubet once filled, I think the database you took the P.O. information from, considered the "new Ubet"/Judith Gap as the successor to the old Ubet station at the stage stop settlement a few miles away: the clientele were bound to be the same folks. But "pieces in three counties" is contrary to fact. This is, as I said, one place which originated the name, and two others which briefly bore the same name, but rapidly saw it changed to their own names. The WPA book on Montana can be read online pretty easily: do a search for "Ubet, Montana" with "Garneill". So according to the GNIS, Garneill is in present-day Fergus County, and its coordinates place it right on the western border of the county. The area still has a grain elevator and a few homes, so it's not entirely gone. According to the WPA book, the original Ubet was three miles west of Garneill (not east like the article said), which would put it in present-day Judith Basin County. Judith Gap is clearly in Wheatland County just south of the Fergus/Judith Basin border, but very much distinct from the other two places. So these are three different places, all of which were called Ubet at some point but none of which are the same settlement. Does that seem right? The original Ubet doesn't seem to be in the GNIS, which isn't too surprising given how long ago it was abandoned. Pruden looks like it's a bit confusing. The GNIS has two entries for Pruden; #1310724 lists Claiborne County, Tennessee as the primary county and Bell County, Kentucky as the secondary county, and #501387 lists Bell County first and Claiborne County second. The coordinates for both are in roughly the same place but on different sides of the state line, and it looks like they refer to the same community based on the satellite imagery. Both the Tennessee and Kentucky county highway maps show Pruden; the Kentucky one is a bit offset from the state line, but not so much that it's a distinct place. Lowland is an interesting one. The GNIS lists Lowland as a locale in Hamblen County and says the post office is in the same area (it's definitely not the same as The Lowlands, since that's in Putnam County). Lowland is also on the Hamblen County highway map, so it appears to be a community of some sort. The odd thing is that it seems to be more of an industrial center than a population center. The post office is apparently closed, but it was located in the middle of a fibers plant which is also closed now, and apparently replaced by a hospital. I also looked through Google news archives and found a bunch of stories about industrial plants opening and closing in Lowland. Wasp looks like a ghost town to me. It's not on the Cocke County highway map anymore, and the satellite view of the area doesn't show any sign of a settlement, plus one of the sources (which is a dead link now) refers to "ruins". I hate being wrong. I'm used to being the smartest person in the room and it is very humbling for me when I am wrong about something because I'm not athletic, and when it comes to brains or brawn, brains is whats i gots. This doesn't mean that I won't nominate unicorporated townships for Afd ever again, but it does mean that I won't make the assumption that they can't be sourced. If there is one thing I hate more than wasting time, is being the cause of wasted time. (Self Trout) this is particularly frustrating when I can't get autopatrolled rights because I'm shy of my 50 created pages on one hand, while on the other hand I'm accused by some of being a nazi-like deletionist. The topic is probably notable, but the article as it stands is terrible. Most of it is either copied from or written very closely to the second reference, which is itself heavily biased against the medical profession. The original author seems to also have issues with physicians; the whole business about physicians driving granny women out of business sounds like some sort of "modern science is terrible" diatribe. IMO pretty much everything after the introduction needs to be taken out, the intro needs to be rewritten, and hopefully someone can find neutral sources. Houlka and New Houlka appear to be the same place, so I redirected Houlka to New Houlka. After a lot of searching, I found that McMan is an alternate name for Dundee, Oklahoma. Hey there- On several main WV County pages is a list of communities and then, in the county template, the communities are listed again. HOWEVER, my issue is as follows: In Fayette and Wood Counties, the number of communities (thank you thank you) has grown and listing them on the main county page would be at best, bad formatting.....Do you think it would be OK to indicate that the list if partial, as in Unincorporated Comminities (partial) and then tell them to look in the template below (Partial list, see county box below for full list)????? It seems fine to just have a partial list for counties like that with 100+ communities; we probably don't need every place in those lists if we say that they're all in the template. As long as we mention the more significant places (CDPs, places with post offices, places that had post offices until recently, etc.), it should be OK. Hi-I had to revert changes to the Lima Center, Wisconsin article. An editor kept changing it to the village (town) of Lima Center that does not exist. Lima Center is located in the town of Lima, Rock County, Wisconsin. I left a Welcome! template and a comment at the editor's talk page and a comment at the Lima Center, Wisconsin article. Hey- I have attemp[ted to contact an editor in good faith concerning Beckley, West Virginia and Bradshaw. Specifically, Beckley has a cat of Populated places established in 1838. In 1838, Beckley, was a piece of paper. It was not until some 10+ years later that the place had streets (mud paths) much less permanent settlers in the city proper. Should we have this category there?

Bradshw was a total copy of an article, which I removed the copied material after citing the url where they basically, copied the whole freaking page with zero refs..."Jewel" of WV, majestic mountains, friendly people etc etc, uh...NO. At least not in Wiki terms. My contention is WTF is that article, a start?? Should it even be a start. Hell I added the zip code, HOW could you have a start there? The link you gave for Bradshaw copied Wikipedia, rather than the other way around. They have a "link to full article" that links to Wikipedia at the bottom of their page, and they copied the geography and demograpics sections that have been in the article since 2002. That said, none of the stuff you removed was referenced and a lot of it was unencyclopedic, so I don't see a good reason to put it back. The article at least has the geography and demographics sections, so I'm fine with calling it a start.

So I looked at some of the other featured lists of counties to see what they look like. This mostly taught me that the featured lists of counties are very inconsistent in what they include, but it did give me a few ideas about the intro:

• There should probably be some more history of how the counties were formed. It doesn't have to be that long, but it should be more than two sentences. It should probably say a bit more about the pre-statehood history of the counties (since that's fairly important for WV), and it should also mention how the counties became part of what was then Virginia. For instance, was the whole state split up into large counties early on, or were new counties gradually added as Virginia spread out?
• You might want to mention the largest and smallest counties; some lists, like Alabama and Tennessee do this, but others don't. Probably your call.
• I assume this is temporary, but the map shouldn't be that big.
• The article could probably use a copyedit before it gets nominated. I might just do that myself if I have time.
• All of the data in the table looks good now that it has references.

I have some pics (good ones, mine, public etc etc) that will explain the political side of St Johns at Stotesbury. LOOOONG ago, in 2002, coal field history folks like myself were the red headed bastard step kids that everyone did not like, ESPECIALLY in small towns that are, to be kind, aesthetically challenged.....St Johns was the black church, all wood multiple stories, look on Flickr, look for a user named whitbywv, you will see. I have a pic of the foundation stone. They let the church go to collapse, preserving it would have been an attraction, because, the church was ...stunning. The white church, also nice, BUT NOT stunning still has services. It is perfectly maintained. It has no graveyard. The church at St Johns, had a cemetery, a black cemetery, rather historic, and NOT well maintained. Many of us, would watch the place. We babysat it and shared notes on Skype, or Yahoo. The collapse was not a surprise. Oh, they always remain on Flickr. The tool just copies them so they're on Commons too. It's really useful, there are a lot of people who post photos on Flickr under a free license but don't think of putting them on Wikipedia, so I just upload them. See this picture, for instance. No problem. You actually don't need a tool to categorize the debates; there's a template for it near the top of each AfD which looks like {{REMOVE THIS TEMPLATE WHEN CLOSING THIS AfD|X}}. To categorize the debate, put the appropriate letter from here in place of the X. I can see why it's confusing, since that's probably the strangest name we have for a commonly-used template. Hey- Take a look here. Remember when I said that in May something really cool would happen? Funny thing about coal scrip, WV has the largest diversity of its issuers (LOTS OF COAL TOWNS). Hi-I just found out that part of the town of Bloomfield, Walworth County, Wisconsin was incorporated as a village in early 2012. Some of the recent information mention that sections of the town of Bloomfield, Walworth County, Wisconsin could be annex to other incorporated areas like Genoa City, Wisconsin. To add to the confusion the village and town are located at the Bloomfield Town Hall. There is a possibilty the town of Bloomfield in Walworth could be dissolved. Also the CDP of Pell Lake, Wisconsin was incorporated into the new village and the Pell Lake Sanitary District was dissolved as a result. Any assistance and help in sorting this would appreciated. The Census Bureau's Geographic Changes page explains a lot of the boundary changes. Aside from starting the village article, I updated the Town of Bloomfield and Pell Lake articles. I also updated Powers Lake; apparently the Walworth County part of Powers Lake got incorporated into the village. I should probably check if North Bloomfield, Wisconsin is part of the village or not. The Town of Bloomfield doesn't seem to have a working website anymore either. We'll see what happens to the rest of it, I guess. About Harrison, my research confirmed that there used to be an unincorporated community named Harrison at the location listed at Harrison (community), Calumet County, Wisconsin. I was highlighted by a church which was torn down almost 100 years ago. There still are some houses so I think the article should remain as it is. I knew about the new village passing the referendum but I didn't start an article on the village. It should have a separate article since the village will be miles away from the unincorporated community. I suppose since it passed, someone could start an article on the upcoming community. It's beyond crystal ball. There should be some reliable references but I decided to wait. I thought I heard that the name is going to be Harrison. The new village could be in place by April 2, 2013-Wisconsin Spring Election. The Wisconsin Secretary of State Doug LaFollette would certified the new village. The Catalyst31 is right we don't know the name of the new village yet. The Town of Harrison website provides information about the incorporation and has a map of where the new village is located. Hi-I am still watching for developments on the new village of Harrison in Calumet County, Wisconsin. According to the Town of Harrison website the Wisconsin Circuit Court order for the incorporation referendum was to be for the Village of Harrison. The new Village of Harrison is in the Darboy, Wisconsin area. The Secretary of State Doug LaFollette needs to certify the incorporation papers. I am still not sure about the unincorporation community of Harrison which is located elsewhere in Calumet County. I would like to get back to Nyttend's Zipcode Directory. The only comment on the Forestville merger is one editor who says they will probably eventually merit separate articles, but they also said that a year ago and still haven't really expanded either. An additional thought: there is precedent in Wisconsin about communities in Wisconsin with multiple names. In Douglas County, Wisconsin you have the city, village, and town of Superior all within a few miles of each other and the city and village of Pewaukee. You will probably have the town of Harrison, the village of Harrison, and the unincorporated community of Harrison is the same county-Calumet County. Hello TheCatalyst31! I have been a daily user of Wikipedia for almost a decade now. I haven't started many pages (actually, I can't even remember if I've actually created one before tonight!), but I have tried my best to keep it "clean & correct" around various articles. I've never marked any pages for deletion or questioned the authors for their sources.. as everything I've ever "needed" from Wikipedia I could verify from an outside sources (kudos! for we have an amazing resource here...). Tonight I started the article Fin Leavell who is one of my -and many others - favorite musicians of all time. He has released countless album internationally and is known by quite a large audience. 30 minutes after I saved the page, I got flagged for notability and sources. While I can see how the article could be confusing to someone who didn't have a lot of knowledge on the music scene, I would just like some help trying to fix the article. I can't tell if the person who flagged me is a new user or not? And this is the first time I'm using a talk page - I feel way more comfortable asking you a question since I see a whole bunch of questions below me. Thank you and I appreciate any help that could be given. I also wanted to note that the article isn't 100% completed. I did plan on filling in some juicy details about performances on the Cartoon Network, at the Playboy Mansion, music contributed to the Playboy video game, music contributed to movie and television soundtracks, touring mates, producers connected to him, and additional notability information. A few years ago, while taking pics at Jenkinjones WV, I noted that while I used an old topo map to walk about, my gps and google maps kept saying, County Route 8 etc etc, SO, I took a look see recently here on Wikipedia......In Anawalt there is a CR8/2 and in Jenkinjones, there is a CR8/3.......As these are in McDowell County, I took a look at CR8 here for WV, no mention of McDowell....what am I missing??? In general Wikipedia doesn't have much coverage of county roads unless they're particularly notable. Most county roads tend to be short local roads that aren't as well traveled as state highways, so most of the time the only source you can find for a county road is the official highway map (and in some states you don't even get that). There are often lists of county roads, but when you can only make the lists by picking every highway out of a map, they often don't exist (I think only 3 counties in WV have lists of their county roads). It would make sense to discuss what county roads pass through a community, though, since they're often the only way to get in and out of a place.

As for CR 8 in particular, I looked up WVDOT's map of McDowell County, and it shows CR 8 as running from WV 84 in Anawalt to the Virginia border southeast of Jenkinjones. It's the main road into Jenkinjones, which would explain why your GPS said you were on it. The map says that CR 8/2 and CR 8/3 are both in Anawalt; I'm not sure where on Wikipedia it says that CR 8/3 goes to Jenkinjones, but that should be corrected. COOLIO. As for Wiki specifically, Jenkinjones Company Store and Offices merely states its CR8. BUT, every map thus far states 8/3. I wanted to update the McDowell County article to reflect CR8 as part of its transportation section. BUT, when I look up CR8 WV here on Wikipedia, it has it in the northernmost part of the state. SO, my quandry is, HOW do I show CR as bering in McDowell County and some how resolve the current CR8 article with refs in the northernmost part of WV?? Is this another CR8, and not the one documented here? I view this as an opportunity to contribute and do alot of updates to roads. County routes can be (and usually are) repeated in different counties, so I imagine that there are a whole lot of CR 8's in WV. When you mention a route in the northernmost part of the state, are you referring to West Virginia Route 8? Because that's a state route (and as far as I can tell, the only route numbered 8 in WV with its own article). State routes are part of a different system than county routes, so there shouldn't be any conflict between the two. You can probably add the important county highways to the Transportation section of the McDowell County page; if you start to do this for other highways/counties, you should probably take a look at the official maps, which should have all of the county highways. As part of the process, I've added new headers and footers to the existing county pages; they previously had a single sentence and GeoGroupTemplate, plus a few navboxes, while I've added fuller texts (including the number of sites) and a map to the header, and See alsos to the bottom. I don't normally customise this kind of header, but I've done it for St Louis County, since the independent status of St Louis is bound to cause confusion otherwise. Jackson County was also hard: Kansas City has been separated out from the county list (and it's divided into two pieces), but unlike most cities that get their own lists, KC is also in other counties, and unlike multi-county big cities like Columbus OH, Kansas City has sites in multiple counties! Since the IP is registered to a school district, it's going to be used by a lot of different people, so I wouldn't block it as a sockpuppet. If the vandalism keeps up, of course, they can be blocked for that. The user is the one I'm more concerned about. They appear to have been using the random page button to vandalize things; I had to revert a bunch of their vandalism going back about a month. They hadn't been warned before yesterday and their last edit was constructive, so I won't block them, but I'd still keep an eye on their contributions. Hey- A user named Gilliam has done some redirecting that is starting to be rather troubling. We has a redirect on McDowell KY which said it was a CDP. Its not. We had a redirect which deletyed Kettle Island Coal Camp KY, to Kettle Island KY, they are seperate. We also have at last count a few hundred redirects for several communities in WV which seem OK, but some, NOT so muchCoal town guy (talk) 13:27, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So the issue with McDowell is complicated. Mcdowell, Kentucky, and McDowell, Kentucky, are the same place, but that place isn't a CDP. The article for McDowell says it's a CDP because the GNIS added an entry for "McDowell Census Designated Place" even though the Census Bureau doesn't recognize McDowell as a CDP. I attempted to fix the article but another editor reverted me because of the GNIS entry, and we never reached a consensus. Of course the GNIS now says that McDowell isn't a CDP in the listing for the populated place, so it's internally inconsistent. There are a lot of erroneous CDP listings like this, but the only place where these got turned into erroneous Wikipedia articles is in eastern Kentucky. So Gilliam was right to merge in that case, it's just that McDowell, Kentucky needs to be resolved one way or the other.

As for Kettle Island, it seems like a pretty innocent mistake; I almost thought they were the same place until I asked you about it. The rest of Gilliam's edits are constructive so I don't see anything to be worried about. TheCatalyst31 ^{Reaction•Creation} 21:03, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually i just figured out that the catscan tool can find the NRHP ones (most) out of my outstanding articles. Running http://toolserver.org/~magnus/catscan_rewrite.php with category= "Pending AfC submissions", with template= "infobox NRHP", and with checkbox in Namespace= for "Wikipedia Talk" checked, currently shows 20 NRHP articles by me. Or here it is in one click.

Got your note. I'll try to consider your views expressed. About using a quote vs. paraphrasing, I don't want to argue it but generally there can be different opinions. I do understand the point that if there is straightforward, unoriginal material, then putting it into our own words and not focussing reader attention on a specific quotation is usually better. If there is an unusual assertion, however, or distinctive/special/clever wording, it can be better to quote the distinctive wording and allow the reader to enjoy that (and give credit to the NRHP nomination document author). I have seen others change distinctive quotes down to poor-quality wording that is simply inferior, sometimes changing the meaning even, and other times just settling for generally poor wording. There's a matter of judgment about when a passage is worthy of quoting; my taste/standard may be different than yours. For example, in the Hilda Erickson House article, i thot the newspaper quote about being a "last living pioneer" out of some group was worthy for longer quoting both for clarity about its specific claim, and for its pretty succinct form. I wouldn't want to paraphrase it into something a lot longer to try to keep the same meaning. And when quoting from an NRHP nomination author, I might consider some phrase to be distinctive that you do not view as special. I know I have had that kind of disagreement with another editor before. By the way though, I do agree with your comment about craftsman vs. bungalow in the Erickson article. And though there is not a quality standard in what is required for a starter article, I do value better writing, so I am indeed happy to consider your views however you choose to share them. Thanks for your attention, including questions and comments, to several articles. One small communication thing: i would put a sentence like "It has also been known as Ayer's Rock Pictograph Site, Bob Rabbit's Pictographs and as INY-134 and as INY-105" (which showed redlinks) into an article, then I would follow the redlinks to create the redirects, then I would return to bold them. It's a minor pain not to have the article started already in mainspace, where i could do that. Redirects back to the article, however, would be deleted by a bot, if the article is in AFC space. It saves steps to let them be as redlinks, then fix after it gets to mainspace, but i see that is confusing to reviewers. Another communication/AFC usage issue is how to indicate/provide stuff for a Talk page. Anyhow, thanks v. much for your attention to these. I do hope you enjoy the reviewing and editing and interaction. I am accused somewhere else for creating articles just to turn a county red...which is not true, i do really enjoy creating the articles and learning a little bit about faraway places and achieving something good for others to build further upon (like just finding coords for the Swedish Zion Lutheran Church, which makes all the difference for a wikipedian photographer to find it, or finding other sources, etc.) I am mildly amused by turning counties red, though, so let that direct where i channel my efforts, which no one should complain about imho. I don't really mind the whole "turning counties red" thing, so long as it's leading to more quality articles. I've been working from county lists myself lately: see Merced County, California, for instance. It's a good way to learn about the history of a county. As for the redirect issue, I'll keep that in mind in the future; I can probably just take care of that when I do the rest of my post-AfC cleanup. Hey there- I did indeed find the KY data online. Question though. I have a copy of Delormes WV Atlas and Gazetteer. I know of a few places I could ref usingh this BUT here is my question: With the KY data, there is a number associated and I could get a link and go from there. BUT, with the WV data, a hard copy, I have no number as a place identifier. I could use a page? and that could be an inline ref? I was also going to ask Catalyst as he has done a PILE of WV locations as well. ANY feedback you have would of course be welcome. I have asked Nyytend this as well, BUT I want to be clear and have a sort of consensus. Funny that you mention Paint Creek. I remember there's a Paint Creek Road that runs along the West Virginia Turnpike for a while between Charleston and Beckley. Since it's such a long road I always wanted to know if there was a town by that name or just a creek, but I always assumed it was just a creek since I couldn't find a community by the name in the GNIS. Hey- Morgan Morgan was claimed to be the first settler in WV. Much like kids being taught Christopher Columbus discovered America. BUT, its not sio, and that has been ref'd. HOWEVER, we have folks who are using a genealogy page about Morgan and from what I can tell, Morgan Morgan sired the entire eastern seaboard, built roads by sheer will and must have been a citizen of the planet Krypton as he was an Inn Keeper and Pastor etc etc etc . Its ALMOST an edit war and BONUS....the editors are IP's!!!! Can we at least lock the thing? Or in some way AGAIN state, the refs they have are not correct. YES, I have some MASSIVE updates for the area of Whitby, Jonben, and Fireco. We need a new entry for as place named Battleship, which was Ralco and then called Battleship. Bowyer, was a place which then acquired the name of Whitby. Battleship, which was Ralco, ALSO was part of Whitby, it was then called West Whitby and I have the plat maps from the county (Raleigh) for that. Hi-I am working on an article about a New Mexico legislator and rancher G. X. McSherry. The obituaries mentioned he was born in Dwyer, New Mexico. That article I started. However, another article said he was born near Faywood, New Mexico. That gets complicated. Nyttend's zipcode directory lists it as having a 88034 zipcode but the GNIS-919965 lists it as a historical (ghost town). It is confusing Faywood, NM is a ghost town but has a zipcode. Hey- Something of interest for some of us. I just scored a copy of "The American counties : origins of county names, dates of creation, and population data, 1950-2000" for rather cheap.

As of this past month, the St Johns Church in Stotesbury, 3 stories, all wood, built by coal miners, was reduced to its stone foundations. I will of course update the Stotesbury article, I will be in fact, totally encyclopedic and not mention this sheer and total waste of what should have been an incredible historic structure. Hi-the Kennedy, Wisconsin article was changed to a ghost town in Price County, Wisconsin. I checked the GNIS and look at Google satellite and it looks like their are still buildings and probably people still living there. However, Kennedy is not on the Wisconsin DOT Price County map. I suspect the latest addition is referring to Kennedy as a ghost town in the sense that it's lost most of its population and businesses and not in the sense that it's completely abandoned. I noticed that Kansas Route 66 Historic District-East Galena needs an article in its KS county, while it was a whatchamacallit(?) link before. I don't know what bigger pattern u might be working on, but i hope u don't mind my raising the hurdle if u were trying to finish that county. I've raised the hurdle on myself that way before (e.g. Morrill). While I don't have a problem with raising the hurdle, I'm not convinced that the historic district needs a separate article; I was actually the one that pointed the link to U.S. Route 66 in Kansas in the first place. The historic district only consists of a short section of the Route 66 roadway and doesn't have any additional buildings in it. Since we already have state-by-state articles on Route 66, the sections of the roadbed which are NRHP-listed are usually just covered in the state articles; see here, for example, where several NRHP-listed sections of roadbed in Oklahoma redirect to the main article. Kansas doesn't have any other NRHP-listed pieces of road since its section of roadbed is so short, but there's still no need to split out this one section. Actually i assumed that the historic district was one that included buildings in a main street type area; i can't think of a historic district example just including roadway (e.g. for historic Rochambeau march route segments in CT, each typically included historic roadside stone walls or other resources, too). This turned out to be different than i expected. And, sorry, i assumed someone else had done the redirect, unknowing of actual content of the district. I wouldn't mind at all if the topic was covered in the Kansas route 66 article instead. Feel free to copy-paste from the draft article, or whatever, to put some coverage into the KS article. There should be at least a redirect from the actual NRHP HD district name, however, as some readers may be looking for that specifically (coming from NRHP.COM or some other source). I guess i could create that, and try adding material to the KS article, as a section or as just a sentence or two. But why don't you just do it? Don't worry, this one had me confused for a while too. The district isn't named in the same way as other segments of Route 66 (which usually have "roadbed" or something in the name), so I was rather surprised when I read the nomination form and it turned out to be another road segment. It doesn't help that the NPS page on the site discusses businesses in Galena, even though there are no businesses included in the district or even discussed in the nomination form.
