Sōjōbō

Sōjōbō (僧正坊) adalah makhluk legendaris berwujud tengu, dan dikenal sebagai raja tengu. Menurut mitos dan cerita rakyat Jepang tengu memiliki kekuatan tempur yang setara dengan seribu tengu biasa. Dikatakan bahwa ia adalah makhluk legendaris yang diperkirakan menghuni pegunungan dan hutan di Jepang. Secara harfiah Sōjōbō (僧 坊) berarti pendeta buddha yang agung. Ia menetap di sebuah gunung kecil sebelah barat laut Kyoto, bernama Gunung Kurama.[1] Karakteristik Sōjōbō biasanya digambarkan sebagai seorang yamabushi atau petapa gunung yang dilengkapi dengan cakar seperti burung dan sayap berbulu. Ia memiliki bentuk fisik seperti manusia dengan rambut putih dan hidung merah panjang, janggut putih panjang serta matanya yang melotot.[2]

Etimologi

Nama Sōjōbō berasal dari teks kuno yang disebut Tengu Meigikō yang berasal dari pertengahan zaman Edo.[3] Catatan lain menyebutkan bahwa nama Sōjōbō berasal dari Sōjōgatani ("Lembah Uskup"), sebuah lembah di Gunung Kurama dekal Kuil Kibune.[4] Sōjōbō terkadang juga disebut dengan nama tengu Kurama, yang merujuk pada tempat tinggal Sōjōbō di Gunung Kurama.

Dalam bahasa Jepang, nama Sōjōbō mengandung tiga kata kanji. Dua karakter pertama dari Sōjōbō ialah Sōjō (僧正) yang berarti "imam besar Buddha," dan kanji terakhir bō (坊) yang berarti "biarawan Buddha."[5] tetapi juga bisa digunakan untuk merujuk ke yamabushi (山伏), yang merupakan pertapa dari tradisi Shugendo.[6] Tengu dan yamabushi keduanya sama-sama tinggal di pegunungan dan memilikii hubungan erat menurut kepercayaan masyarakat setempat.[7]

Mitologi

Dalam salah satu cerita yang paling terkenal adalah ketika Sōjōbō mengajarkan teknik pedang kepada Minamoto no Yoshitune, seorang panglima perang yang terkenal di abad ke-12. Setelah ayah Yoshitune kalah dalam peperangan melawan klan Taira dan terbunuh, Yoshitune dikirim ke sebuah kuil di Gunung Kurama.[2] Dalam perjalanannya, ia bertemu dengan sosok tengu yang diduga adalah Sōjōbō, yang kemudian mengajarkan beberapa teknik seni bela diri kepadanya, termasuk kenjutsu dan tessenjutsu, serta strategi militer.[8] Cerita-cerita ini termuat dalam epos perang Heiji Monogatari (Kisah Heiji).[9]

Sōjōbō juga digambarkan dengan penampilan yang mirip dengan jenis entitas supernatural lainnya. Menurut kritikus teater, Osman Edwards, tengu memiliki banyak kesamaan karakteristik dengan trold Skandinavia.[13] Dalam cerita rakyat Skandinavia, troll adalah monster legendaris yang tinggal di pegunungan dan hutan, serupa dengan sojobo.[14] Sōjōbō dan daitengu secara umum juga digambarkan mirip seperti kami atau dewa Shinto yang dikenal sebagai Sarutahiko.[15]
