Oligotrof

Oligotrof adalah suatu organisme yang dapat hidup dalam lingkungan yang sangat rendah nutrisi. Organisme ini adalah kebalikan dari copiotrophs yang lebih suka lingkungan kaya nutrisi. Oligotrof dicirikan oleh pertumbuhan yang lambat, tingkat metabolisme yang rendah dan umumnya memiliki populasi yang cukup rendah.

Kata sifat oligotrophic dapat digunakan untuk merujuk pada lingkungan yang menawarkan sedikit nutrisi untuk mempertahankan hidup, organisme yang bertahan hidup dalam lingkungan seperti itu atau terhadap adaptasi yang mendukung kelangsungan hidup pada daerah itu.

Lingkungan oligotrophic termasuk sedimen laut dalam, gua-gua, es dan es kutub, di bawah permukaan tanah yang dalam, akuifer, air laut dan tanah tercuci/tererosi yang sudah sangat sedikit unsur hara/nutrisinya.

Contoh organisme oligotrophic adalah bakteri Pelagibacter ubique yang merupakan organisme yang paling banyak ditemukan di lautan. Diperkirakan kelompok kehidupan mikro ini memiliki populasi total sekitar 1027.
