LG Corporation (Hangul: 주식회사 LG), sebelumnya bernama Lucky-Goldstar mulai tahun 1983 hingga 1995 (Korean: Leogki Geumseong; Hangul: 럭키금성; Hanja: 樂喜金星), adalah sebuah konglomerat multinasional asal Korea Selatan. LG merupakan chaebol terbesar keempat di Korea Selatan. Perusahaan ini berkantor pusat di Menara Kembar LG di Yeouido-dong, Distrik Yeongdeungpo, Seoul.[2] LG memproduksi barang elektronik, bahan kimia, dan produk telekomunikasi melalui anak-anak usahanya, seperti LG Electronics, Zenith, LG Display, LG Uplus, LG Innotek, dan LG Chem di lebih dari 80 negara.

Sejarah

LG Corporation didirikan dengan nama Lak Hui Chemical Industrial Corp. pada tahun 1947.[3] Pada tahun 1952, Lak Hui (dilafalkan "Lucky", saat ini menjadi LG Chem) menjadi perusahaan asal Korea Selatan pertama yang masuk ke industri plastik. Setelah bisnis produksi plastiknya makin berkembang, Lucky pun mendirikan GoldStar Co. Ltd. (saat ini menjadi LG Electronics Inc.) pada tahun 1958. Lucky dan GoldStar kemudian bergabung untuk membentuk Lucky-Goldstar pada tahun 1983.[4]

GoldStar memproduksi radio pertama di Korea Selatan.[4] Sejumlah barang elektronik konsumen pun dijual dengan merek GoldStar, sementara produk rumah tangga lain (yang tidak dijual di luar Korea Selatan) dijual dengan merek Lucky. Merek Lucky terkenal berkat produk higienitasnya, seperti sabun dan deterjen HiTi, serta yang paling terkenal adalah pasta gigi Lucky dan Perioe. LG terus memproduksi sejumlah produk rumah tangga untuk dijual di Korea Selatan, seperti deterjen.

Koo Bon-moo mengubah nama perusahaan ini menjadi LG pada tahun 1995.[4] Perusahaan ini juga mengasosiasikan LG dengan slogannya, yakni "Life's Good". Sejak tahun 2009, LG telah memiliki nama domain LG.com.

Pada bulan Juli 2018, diumumkan bahwa Koo Kwang-mo, anak angkat Koo Bon-moo, akan menjadi CEO baru LG. Koo Kwang-mo merupakan keponakan dan anak angkat Koo Bon-moo. Koo Bon-moo mengangkat keponakannya menjadi anak pada tahun 2004, setelah anak tunggalnya meninggal pada tahun 1994.[5] sesuai "aturan suksesi anak pertama saja".[6] Koo Bon-moo kemudian meninggal akibat tumor otak pada tanggal 20 Mei 2018.[7]

Perusahaan patungan

LG dan Hitachi membentuk perusahaan patungan bernama Hitachi-LG Data Storage pada tahun 2000 dan LG Hitachi Water Solutions pada tahun 2011. LG telah lama berhubungan baik dengan Hitachi, yakni sejak Goldstar baru berdiri. Sejak saat itu, Hitachi pun mentransfer teknologinya kepada LG, agar dapat memproduksi radio, kabel, TV, perabot rumah, semikonduktor, dsb. Joint venture pertama antara keduanya adalah LG Hitachi, yang didirikan sekitar dekade 1980-an untuk mengimpor komputer ke Korea.[8]

LG juga pernah memiliki dua joint venture dengan Philips, yakni LG Philips Display dan LG Philips LCD, namun Philips keluar dari joint venture tersebut pada akhir tahun 2008.[9] Pada tahun 2005, LG mendirikan sebuah joint venture bersama Nortel Networks dengan nama LG-Nortel Co. Ltd.

Pasar internasional

Pada tanggal 30 November 2012, comScore menerbitkan sebuah laporan mengenai Pangsa Pasar Ponsel di Amerika Serikat per bulan Oktober 2012, dan menyatakan bahwa LG turun dari peringkat dua ke peringkat tiga, karena dikalahkan oleh Apple Inc.[10]

Pada tanggal 20 Januari 2013, Counterpoint Research mengumumkan bahwa LG telah menyalip Apple, sehingga kembali menjadi pemegang pangsa pasar ponsel terbesar kedua di Amerika Serikat.[11]

Pada tanggal 7 Agustus 2013, comScore menerbitkan sebuah laporan mengenai Pangsa Pasar Ponsel di Amerika Serikat per bulan Juni 2013, dan menyatakan bahwa LG turun ke peringkat kelima.[12]

Logo perusahaan ini menampilkan sebuah lingkaran yang mengelilingi huruf "L" dan "G", yang ditampilkan dalam bentuk wajah manusia yang tersenyum.[13][14]
