Hermann Kolbe.

Adolph Wilhelm Hermann Kolbe (27 September 1818 – 25 November 1884) adalah seorang kimiawan Jerman. Kolbe dilahirkan di Elliehausen dekat Hanover, Jerman. Pada 1869, ia mulai bekerja di Universitas Leipzig.

Pada masa itu, para ahli kimia percaya bahwa senyawa organik dan senyawa anorganik terpisah satu sama lainnya, dan senyawa organik hanya bisa diperoleh dari makhluk hidup. Namun, Kolbe percaya bahwa senyawa organik dapat disintesis dari senyawa anorganik, secara langsung atau tidak langsung, melalui reaksi substitusi. Ia membuktikan teorinya dengan menyintesis asam asetat dari karbon disulfida melalui beberapa tahap (1843-45)[1]. Ia juga mengubah penjelasan tentang radikal bebas, berjasa dalam pencetusan teori struktur, dan memprediksikan keberadaan alkohol sekunder dan tersier. Ia meninggal di Leipzig, Jerman.
