David James Thouless FRS[4] (/ˈθaʊlɛs/; 21 September 1934 – 6 April 2019)[2][7] adalah seorang fisikawan benda terkondensasi asal Britania.[8] Ia adalah pemenang Penghargaan Wolf pada tahun 1990 dan pemenang Nobel Fisika pada 2016 bersama dengan F. Duncan M. Haldane dan John Michael Kosterlitz untuk penemuan teori transisi fase topologis dan fase topologis benda.[9][10][11] Pada 2016, Thouless dilaporkan menderita demensia.[12]

Ia bersama dua temannya ( F. Duncan M. Haldane dan John Michael Kosterlitz) melakukan riset selama 10 tahun sejak tahun 70-an sampai 80-an.[13]

Pendidikan

Thouless menempuh pendidikan di Winchester College dan memperoleh gelar Bachelor of Arts di bidang ilmu alam dari Universitas Cambridge sebagai mahasiswa sarjana Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Ia memperoleh gelar PhD di Universitas Cornell,[7][14] di mana Hans Bethe menjadi pembimbing doktoralnya.[6][15]
