סמן (אזור היסטורי)

סֵמֵן (בגעז: ሰሜን או ሴሜን) הוא אזור ומחוז גאוגרפי-היסטורי בצפון אתיופיה. סמן שוכנת בין אזור צלמת בצפון לוגרה בדרום ובין הטקזה במזרח לסגדה וולדבה במערב. בסמן התקיימה תקופה ארוכה אוטונומיה יהודית של בית ישראל, שקצה הגיע בתחילת המאה ה-17 עם כיבושה בידי האימפריה האתיופית.

היסטוריה

הגאוגרף תלמי מהמאה ה-1 מזכיר עם בשם "סוברידה" שחי מדרום לאקסומים.[1] בתבליט מונומנטום אדוליטנום מוזכר עם בשם "סמנוי" שחי באזור הררי ומושלג שמדרום לאקסום ולטקזה.[2] ההרים הללו שנקראים כיום "סמן" נקראו בכתבי הגאוגרפיים מהתקופה הרומית בשם היווני "פיילה"/"פיילאי" ולפיהם השם המקומי היה "פסאבו".[3]

על פי מסורת בית ישראל היהודים הראשונים הגיעו לסמן מאזור אדיבו.[4] במסורת האתיופית נחשב האזור לחלק מהשטחים שניתנו לגדעון.[5] פינחס, אחד מצאצאי גדעון שהוביל קבוצה שסירבה להתנצר, היגר לסמן במאה ה-4, בתקופתם של אברהא ואצבחא. פינחס וצאצאיו מלכו על היהודים המקומיים. שושלת מלכים זו מכונה בשם "שושלת הגדעונים" מכיוון שרבים ממלכיה נשאו בשם "גדעון".

בכתובת אקסומית מהמאה ה-4 הוזכרה סמן כישות מדינית שמעלה מס לאקסום.[6] קוסמוס אינדיקופלוסטס מזכיר במאה ה-6 את אזור "סמני" כמקום שאליו מגלים מלכי אקסום מורדים.[7]

לאחר כיבוש סמן בידי האתיופים, עבר האזור לשליטה קיסרית ישירה ושליטיו זכו לתואר אגפרי. ברוב המקרים יורשי העצר הם שמונו לשליטי המחוז. האגפרי הראשון של סמן היה הנסיך פאסילידס. בתקופת השופטים עבר האזור מיד ליד ככל הנראה נשלט על ידי שליטים שבאו מרקע יהודי כמו למשל דג'זמץ' וובה היילה מריאם.

תחת האיטלקים סמן הייתה חלק ממחוז אמהרה. בחלוקה המנהלית של 1941-1987 סימן הייתה לנפה בתוך מחוז בגמדר ובשנים שבין 1987-1994 סימן הייתה לחלק ממחוז צפון גונדר. כיום שטח סמן ההיסטורית נמצא במחוז צפון גונדר שבמדינת אמהרה ומחולק בין הנפות ג'ן אמורה, ביאדה, צלמת, אדי ארקאי, דברק ודבת.

חלק מהרי סמן שבאזור הוא פארק לאומי בעל מעמד של אתר מורשת עולמית מאז 1978.
