גֵיי (מאנגלית: Gay) היא מילה בשפה האנגלית המציינת אדם הנמשך לבני מינו. באנגלית מכוונת המילה לכל המגדרים, אולם בעברית, ששאלה את המילה (כמו רבות משפות העולם), מתייחסת מילה זו לגברים בלבד (כמילה נרדפת ל"הומוסקסואל"). מקבילות נוספות למונח הן הומו או עליז (מיושן וכמעט ולא בשימוש כיום) כשם כולל להומואים זכרים, וגאה – תרגום שומר משמעות וצליל (תשמו"ץ), המתייחס לגאווה להט"בית (Gay pride) ובה-בעת שומר על צליל המילה האנגלית gay – ככינוי ללהט"בים. בעבר נהוג היה בישראל לכנות לסביות כ"נעמות" והומואים כ"נעימים", כתרגום המונח, אך גם כינויים אלו אינם בשימוש למעלה מ-20 שנים.[1]

היסטוריה

המונח האנגלי "גיי" (gay) תיאר במקור את הרגשות שאננות, שמחה ואופטימיות. בעברו הרחוק יותר, בשנות ה-30 של המאה ה-17, הוא אף סימן חוסר-מוסריות.[2] בשלהי המאה ה-19 החל המונח להתקשר להומוסקסואליות, אך רק במהלך המאה ה-20 גדל בהדרגה השימוש בו במובן זה.[2] ככל הנראה אחד השימושים הראשונים בדפוס במילה בהקשרה ההומוסקסואלי היה בספרה של גרטרוד שטיין מ-1922, "העלמה פר והעלמה סקין".[3] באנגלית מודרנית משמש המונח הן כשם תואר והן כשם עצם. עד סוף המאה ה-20, השימוש במילה "גיי" לתיאור אנשים הנמשכים לבני-מינם היה בעיקר במאמרים ובמסמכים אחרים.[4][5] באותה תקופה, בחלקים מסוימים של העולם הפך המונח לכינוי גנאי; דוגמה לכך היא בקרב המדינות דוברות האנגלית (ארצות הברית, קנדה, בריטניה וכו'), שבהן משמעות המילה "גיי" בקרב הצעירים זהה ל"שטויות" או "טיפש" (לדוגמה: "That's so gay" – "זה כ"כ גיי"). בשימוש זה אין הכוונה להומו, כך שניתן להשתמש במושג זה גם לגבי עצמים דוממים ומושגים מופשטים. יש מחלוקת בשאלה האם השימוש במשמעות זו שומר על המשמעות ההומוסקסואלית או לא.[6][7]
