גבעת המכשפות ( Raganų kalnas-רגאנו קלנס-בשפה הליטאית) היא גבעה מיוערת בפארק הלאומי של הרצועה הקורונית, עליה ממוקמים כ-100 פסלי עץ[1] אשר נושאיהם שאובים מהפולקלור הליטאי. בין דוברי העברית המקום ידוע כ"יער המכשפות".

מיקום

"גבעת המכשפות" היא חלק מהדיונות הפרבוליות של הרצועה הקורונית. רוב הפסלים ממוקמים סביב "עמק האשוחים", המוקף דיונות. העמק היה ידוע בשמו הגרמני Tannental[2], ונמצא בצמידות לעיירה יודקראנטה (אנ')

הרצועה הקורונית עצמה ידועה גם בשם נרינגה, על שם דמות אגדית של נערה ענקית, טובת לב. לפי אותה אגדה נרינגה יצרה את הרצועה הקורונית כדי להגן על דייגי הלגונה הקורונית (אנ') מפני הסערות בים הבלטי.[3] בשפה הגרמנית המילה neringe פרושה רצועה צרה וארוכה של חול.[4]

האמונה במכשפות

האזור הידוע היום בשם "הארצות הבלטיות" היה אזור של דתות פגניות. כאשר האזור נכבש על ידי המסדר הטאוטוני, במאה ה-13, אבירי המסדר ניסו לכפות על האוכלוסייה המקומית את הנצרות, אך ללא הצלחה מרובה. גם האליתה הבלטית הגרמנית, אשר שלטה באזור מאוחר יותר, עשתה פעולות רבות להחדרת הנצרות, אך אוכלוסיית הכפרים המשיכה לאחוז באמונות הפגניות.[5] העדות לאמונה בקיומן ופעילותן של מכשפות באה לידי ביטוי בקיומם של משפטים נגד מכשפות בדוקסות הגדולה של ליטא. רוב המשפטים הללו הסתיימו בגזר דין מוות והעלאה על המוקד של הנאשמים. רק בשנת 1776 נאסרו משפטים כאלה על ידי הסיים של איחוד פולין-ליטא.[6]

דמותה של אלילה/ מכשפה בשם רגאנה מופיעה באזור זה כבר באמונות קדומות מאד, בתקופה הניאוליטית. בתקופה מאוחרת יותר היא דמות מרכזית בפולקלור, אחראית למחזורי החיים בטבע ומלווה על ידי "מכשפות פשוטות", הנקראות גם כן רגאנה.[7]

ייחודיות האזור

בתקופות קדומות אזור זה נחשב בעל איכויות מגיות. בהתאם, השתרשה אמונה שבגבעה זו נהגו להתאסף מכשפות יחד עם יצורים דמונים נוספים, לחגיגות ליליות אשר פסקו עם עלות השחר וקריאת התרנגול, אך התחדשו בלילה שלאחר מכן.[8] כך הגבעה קיבלה את שמה כ"גבעת המכשפות".

עד מלחמת העולם הראשונה, קהל של אלפים נהג להגיע לכאן בליל ה-24 ביוני, לחגיגה בשם Jonines(סנט ג'ון) לכבוד יוחנן המטביל. החגיגות כללו תפילות לכבוד אמצע הקיץ.[9] במסגרת שארית האמונות הפגניות, חלק מקהל זה התפזר ביער בלילה, בחיפוש אחר פריחה של השרך הקסום.[10] לפי האמונה, השרך פורח רק בלילה זה והאדם שימצא אותו יזכה ביכולות נדירות כגון הבנת שפת בעלי חיים וניבוי העתיד.[8], למרות שבמציאות שרכיים אינם פורחים כלל.

תולדות פארק הפסלים

בשנת 1979, כאשר ליטא הייתה חלק מברית המועצות, השלטונות יזמו סדנת פיסול בעץ, ליצירת פסלים על מוטיבים מהפולקלור הליטאי. הסדנא הוקדשה לשנת הילד הבינלאומית ועוצבו בה 25 פסלים. שלוש הסדנאות המשך, בשנים 1979-1981, הניבו 71 פסלים. הפרויקט נוהל על ידי הפסל Steponas Šarapovas וע"י האדריכל Algimantas Nasvytis. בהמשך, אוסף הפסלים גדל וחודש. בשנת 1988 נוספו 12 פסלים משעשעים ובשנת 1999 הוחל בשיקום הפסלים הראשונים. בשנת 2002 חלק מהפסלים הישנים, אשר נפגעו מהלחות, הוחלפו בפסלים חדשים.[2]
