ג'ו שווארץ

הרב ד"ר יוסף-יהושע (ג'ו) שווארץ (23 במרץ 1899 – ינואר 1975) היה מנהל המערך של הג'וינט באירופה בתקופת השואה ואחריה. הוא עמד בראש פעילות סיוע והצלה שתמכה באלפי יהודים בתקופת השואה באירופה הכבושה בידי גרמניה הנאצית, וכן ביהודים שהיו בשטחי ברית המועצות שלא נכבשו. בהמשך היה סגן יושב ראש המגבית היהודית המאוחדת וסגן נשיא הבונדס.

ראשית חייו

ג'ו שווארץ נולד ב-1899 בנובה אודסה שבאימפריה הרוסית (כיום באוקראינה). נקרא על שם דודו מצד אמו, הרב יוסף יהושע פרייל], שהיה מהמשתתפים בקובץ "יגדיל תורה" ונפטר לפני לידתו של ג'ו שווארץ.[1] ב-1907 היגר לארצות הברית, עם הוריו, אברהם-נחמן וגולדה-מרים, ועם ארבע אחיותיו. בארצות הברית נולדו שתי אחיותיו הצעירות ואחיו הצעיר. בשנים 1915–1921 למד בישיבת רבינו יצחק אלחנן בניו יורק והוסמך לרבנות. בין השנים 1922-1925 היה רב קהילה. ב-1928 נולד לו ולאשתו, השחקנית דורה ראשבק, בנם היחיד, נתן.[2] באותה שנה קיבל תואר דוקטור במזרחנות מאוניברסיטת ייל. לאחר מכן הרצה באוניברסיטה האמריקאית בקהיר ובשנים 1930–1933 לימד באוניברסיטת לונג איילנד (אנ'). דיבר אנגלית, יידיש, גרמנית, צרפתית, עברית, ערבית, ארמית ואשורית.[3] עבד בארגון רווחה יהודי בברוקלין וב-1939 החל לעבוד בג'וינט בתפקיד מזכיר.

בתקופת השואה

בשנת 1940 עבר מטעם הג'וינט לאירופה. הוא הגיע לפריז יום לפני נפילתה בידי גרמניה הנאצית, סייע לנציג הג'וינט בצרפת (ולאחר מכן בדרום צרפת) הרברט קצקי (Herbert Katzki) בהשמדת מסמכי הג'וינט במשרד הג'וינט בעיר, וברח לבורדו, שם פתח משרד סיוע לפליטים.[4] לאחר המערכה על צרפת ועל ארצות השפלה עבר משרד הג'וינט באירופה לליסבון. משם המשיך שווארץ לפעול. הוא סייע ליהודים להגר מאירופה[5] וכן לנרדפי נאצים אחרים, בהם הסופר היינריך מאן[6], והעביר כספים לארגוני הצלה של מבוגרים וילדים. שווארץ ואנשיו סייעו לילדים שהופרדו מהוריהם בעת מעברי הגבול מצרפת הכבושה לספרד הנייטרלית, ולפליטי הנאצים שאיבדו את כל רכושם בעת הבריחה. כ-25,000 יהודים הסתייעו בפעילותו.[7][8] בהמשך סייע שווארץ לדיפלומט הפורטוגלי ארישטידש דה סוזה מנדש שפוטר עקב פעילותו להצלת יהודים.[9]

שווארץ מינה את סאלי מאייר לנציג הג'וינט בשווייץ, סייע להעפלה והקים באיסטנבול משרד נוסף של הג'וינט. כספים שהצליח לגייס בארצות הברית הועברו לארגוני התנגדות והסתרת יהודים באירופה הכבושה, והגיעו בין היתר גם לתנועת ההתנגדות הצרפתית ולצבא היהודי.[10] כספים נוספים הגיעו לגטו ורשה, דרך השליח יצחק גיטרמן,[11] ואף סייעו במימון מרד גטו ורשה.[12] לאחר תחילת הניצחונות של בעלות הברית בצפון אפריקה, בסוף 1942, החל בקשרים עם יהדות צפון אפריקה.[13] בקיץ ובסתיו 1943 ביקר בארץ ישראל וארגן משלוחי מזון, בגדים וציוד סיוע גם לפליטים יהודים בברית המועצות ובטרנסניסטריה.[14] ניסה לסייע לסאלי מאייר במשא ומתן עם קורט בכר, בו ניסו נציגים יהודים שונים של יהדות הונגריה, בהם ישראל קסטנר, להציע כופר לבכר בתמורה להצלת יהודים בהונגריה.[15]

ביולי 1944 נפגשו באיסטנבול פעילי המוסד לעלייה ב' שאול מאירוב ואליעזר קפלן עם ג'ו שוורץ וראובן רזניק, נציגי הג'וינט באירופה ובמזרח התיכון, ובעקבות הפגישה הסכים הג'וינט לממן 75% מההוצאות על אוניות מעפילים.

לאחר השואה

לאחר המלחמה ארגן שווארץ את פעילות הג'וינט בצרפת. הוא שלח צוותים של הג'וינט למחנות העקורים בגרמניה וניסה לשלוח צוותי ג'וינט לארצות מזרח אירופה, בעיקר להונגריה, רומניה ופולין. הוא ביקר במחנות העקורים כחבר בוועדת ארל הריסון בשליחות הנשיא טרומן,[16] ועדה שלאחר ביקורה פרסמה את דו"ח הריסון. לשווארץ היה חלק בכתיבת הדו"ח.[17] דו"ח זה היה בעל השפעה מרכזית בהחלטתו של טרומן לתמוך בהגירה יהודית לארץ ישראל למען פתרון שאלת העקורים.

עוד סייע שווארץ לארגון "הבריחה". ארגון הג'וינט ביקש לא להזדהות עם הציונות כדי לא להתנגש עם הבריטים, ששלטו בארץ ישראל, שכן הג'וינט נזקק לאישור הבריטים לשם פעילותו באירופה, וכן מכיוון שארגון הג'וינט הוקדש לרווחתם של יהודים בכל העולם ולא רק לרווחת הציונים באופן ספציפי. עם זאת, באוגוסט 1948, לאחר עזיבת הבריטים את ארץ ישראל, אישר שווארץ סיוע של הג'וינט לעלייה ההמונית.

ב-1950 מונה לסגן יושב ראש המגבית היהודית המאוחדת. בשנים 1955–1970 היה סגן נשיא הבונדס.
