אילש ברודי (בהונגרית: Bródy Illés;‏ בודפשט, 27 בדצמבר 1899 – 11 בנובמבר 1953)[1] היה עיתונאי וסופר יהודי-הונגרי-אמריקאי שחי בארצות הברית משנות ה-30. לאחר התחלה כושלת כאמן דיוקנאות, הוא נודע כסופר אוכל גורמה שהמתמקד באוכל ובמסעדות לרבות כתביהם של מבקרי אוכל, שפים והיסטוריוני אוכל. עבור קריירת הכתיבה שלו האיות המועדף על שמו היה Iles Brody; במקורות אחרים שמו נכתב לפעמים בצורה האנגלית כ-Elias Brody.

קורות חייו

ברודי נולד במשפחה יהודית בבודפשט, הונגריה, כבנם הצעיר של הסופר המפורסם שאנדור ברודי ושל איזבלה רוזנפלד.[2][3] לאחר שירות בחיל הפרשים ההונגרי בצעירותו,[4] הוא טייל רבות ברחבי אירופה.

בשנת 1927, התחתן עם רקדנית שיגיונות זיגפלד האמריקאית ורה "קיטנס" לייטמר (לבית רוברטסון, 1899–1997).[5][6][7] בני הזוג נפגשו בפריז, נישאו בבודפשט, והתיישבו בניו יורק, אך הנישואים התבררו סוערים למדי והסתיימו בגירושים ב-1932.[8] ברודי (אז תואר כאמן דיוקנאות), פגע בלייטמר לפני אירוסיהם, לפי הדיווחים, והם ניסו להתאבד מספר פעמים במהלך מערכת היחסים ביניהם.[9][10][11] בני הזוג היו מעורבים גם בתיק משפט מתוקשר כאשר לייטמר תבעה ללא הצלחה בנקאי אמריקאי בולט, ג'פרסון זליגמן, על הפרת הבטחת נישואים.[12]

ב-1932, לאחר הפרידה מלייטמר, הורשע ברודי בלונדון, אנגליה, בסחיטה של שתי אחיות אמריקאיות, מילדרד ריד בורק וקונסטנס ריד נצ'ר. על אף שטען לחפותו, הוא נכלא לעשרה חודשים וגורש מבריטניה לאחר ריצוי עונשו.[13][14][15]

ב-1938, לאחר חזרתו לארצות הברית, התחתן עם מארי הולינגסוורת' (Marie Hollingsworth) בווירג'יניה. נראה שנישואים אלה הסתיימו גם בגירושים לפני 1949.

קריירת כתיבה מאוחרת

בסוף שנות ה-30 חזר ברודי לעיר ניו יורק, שם הפך לבעל טור קבוע במגזין אסקווייר. כקצין פרשים לשעבר, תרומתו המוקדמת הייתה בנושא ספורט סוסים ורכיבה על סוסים. מאוחר יותר הפך לכתב אוכל, עם טור ותיק בשם "איש המטבחון", אשר - קצת יוצא דופן לתקופה - הציע עצות קולינריות המיועדות לקהל קוראים גברי.[16] הוא גם כתב למגזין גורמה.(Gourmet (magazine)[17]

ברודי פרסם שני ספרים הקשורים לגסטרונומיה: על קצה לשוני (1944)[18] ו"המושבה" (The Colony: Portrait of a Restaurant and its Famous Recipes) דיוקן של המסעדה והמתכונים המפורסמים שלה" (1945), היסטוריה של המסעדה הניו יורקית הידועה המושבה.[19]

ספרו השלישי והאחרון, שבגללו הוא כנראה זכור לטוב ביותר, היה Gone with the Windsors (1953), תחקיר עיתונאי לרב מכר[1] על אדוארד השמיני, מלך הממלכה המאוחדת ווליס סימפסון, דוכסית וינדזור. המבקר האמריקאי EV Durling תיאר את הספר כ"ספר הכתוב בצורה מבריקה ביותר עד כה שעוסק בחייהם ובאהבותיהם של הדוכס והדוכסית".[20] תגובות אחרות היו פחות חיוביות. הצהובון הבריטי "The Sunday People" גינה את היצירה כ"פתלתלה", הפנה את תשומת הלב להרשעת הסחיטה של ברודי ב-1932, והרתיע את המוציאים לאור הבריטיים הפוטנציאליים של ברודי לפרסם את הספר בבריטניה. ברודי נאבק במשך שלוש שנים כדי למצוא מוציא לאור בארצות הברית עבור Gone with the Windsors,[21] ועל פי הדיווחים הופעל לחץ על ידי מקורבי הדוכס והדוכסית לא לפרסם את הספר.[22] הדוכסית מווינדזור הביעה הקלה כאשר ברודי מת זמן קצר לאחר פרסומו של הספר.[23]

מותו

ברודי מת באופן פתאומי מהתקף לב ב-11 בנובמבר 1953, בזמן שהותו במלון פאלאס בסן פרנסיסקו.[21] הוא הותיר אחריו את אשתו השלישית, סאנה קלאבנס (Sanna Klaveness),[24][25] איתה התחתן ב-1949.[26]
