נַחַל דָּוִד הוא נחל איתן הזורם בשמורת עין גדי שבדרום-מזרח מדבר יהודה.

אטימולוגיה

שמו של נחל דוד על שם דוד המלך אשר ברח מפני שאול בין היתר גם לאזור עין גדי בו זורם הנחל: "וַיַּעַל דָּוִד מִשָּׁם וַיֵּשֶׁב בִּמְצָדוֹת עֵין-גֶּדִי"[1], "וַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁב שָׁאוּל מֵאַחֲרֵי, פְּלִשְׁתִּים, וַיַּגִּדוּ לוֹ לֵאמֹר: הִנֵּה דָוִד בְּמִדְבַּר עֵין גֶּדִי".[2]

מבנה הנחל

חלקו העליון והמערבי של הנחל, סמוך לרוג'ום א-נקה, אכזב ורדוד. כמו כל נחלי מדבר יהודה, כשהוא נכנס לבמת השוליים המזרחיים, מתקרב למצוק ההעתקים ונכנס לשמורת עין גדי, הוא נשבר במפל ענק שגבהו 184 מטרים. בקטע זה מתחיל קטע הערוץ הקניוני, היפה והמגוון של הנחל. חלקו העליון של הקניון יבש תמיד מלבד בזמן הגשמים ולכן מכונה "הקניון היבש". בחלק זה קיים מצוק ובתחתיתו גבים רבים המלאים מים גם בקיץ. סיומו של קטע ערוץ זה ב"מפל החלון" המזמן תצפית נאה אל ים המלח והרי מואב ומזווית מסוימת נראים שני צוקים אמתניים שסוגרים מעל התצפית, ומכאן שמו. בראש מפל החלון נמצא "גב חלון"- בריכת מי שיטפונות המתמלאת וניתנת לרחצה לאחר שיטפון גדול. מהבריכה ניתן לחזות בתצפית המפל. כמו כן מצויים בקרבת הנחל עוד שני מעיינות איתנים: האחד הוא "מעיין שולמית" הנראה לעין בלא יותר מאשר זרזיף מים בינות לערימת קנים, בדרך העולה מערוץ נחל אל עבר המעיין השני והנודע יותר, הוא מעיין עין גדי.

בחלקו התחתון של הנחל זורמים מימיו כל השנה והוא פתוח לקהל הרחב בתשלום. "עין דוד" הוא המעיין העיקרי אשר מזין את הנחל במימיו. מקור המעיין הוא במי גשמים היורדים בהרי יהודה, מחלחלים למי התהום, זורמים מזרחה מתחת לפני הקרקע ובוקעים בראש מפל שולמית, המפל הראשון והגבוה ביותר (כ-22 מטרים) מתוך סדרה של ארבעה מפלים הזורמים כל ימות השנה בנחל.

"מפל דוד" שבנחל סגור למטיילים בשל סכנת אבנים מידרדרות. באוגוסט 2023 אירעה מפולת סלעים בנחל שהובילה למותו של ילד בן 5 ופציעתם של מטיילים נוספים.[3]

בשנת 2005 פגעה בצמחייתו הטרופית הייחודית של הנחל שרפה שנגרמה ככל הנראה על ידי מטיילים לא זהירים והביאה להשמדתו של כ-80% מהצומח בנחל.

צירוף המקום הגאוגרפי בבקע ים המלח, הנוף המצוקי ומקורות המים המתוקים, מאפשרים למגוון גדול של צמחייה ובעלי חיים האופייניים לאזורים גאוגרפיים שונים לחיות אלה בצד אלה. בביקור בנחל ניתן לראות יעלים נוביים ושפני סלע ממש בסמוך לשביל הטיול.
