מה אם... (באנגלית: —What If) הוא סיפור מדע בדיוני קצר מאת אייזק אסימוב. הסיפור הופיע לראשונה בגיליון קיץ 1952 של Fantastic, ותורגם לעברית בשנת 1980 בספר אין איש פה, פרט... תחת השם "והיה אם...", ושוב בשנת 2010 בספר כתבי אייזק אסימוב כרך 2. הסיפור נכתב בהשראת אשתו של אסימוב, שאתגרה אותו שיכתוב סיפור, שמבוסס על נסיעה שהם נסעו ברכבת לניו יורק.

עלילה

זוג הנשוי כבר חמש שנים נוסע מבוסטון לניו יורק כדי לחגוג את חמש שנות נישואיהם. הם פוגשים ברכבת אדם שקט ומסתורי הידוע בשם מר אִם, אשר מציג להם מכשיר נייד קטן דמוי טלוויזיה בגודל של 15 ס"מ על 24 ס"מ.

בעזרת המכשיר מראה מר אִם לזוג סצנות מחייהם הקודמים, ומה היה קורה אילו דבר קטן מהאירועים האלה היה מתרחש באופן שונה.

בסופו של דבר הם מגלים כי גם עם השינויים שמר אִם הראה להם, בסופו של דבר הם היו מתחתנים בכל זאת ונוסעים ברכבת הזאת לחופשה בניו יורק.

מוטיבים דומים בספרות

הרעיון של שינויים גדולים במציאות בעקבות שינויים קטנים מתרחש גם בספר קץ כלזמן ובסיפור הקצר איית את שמי באות ס' שנכתבו גם הם בידי אסימוב.

בסדרת האנימציה פיוצ'רמה עשו שימוש בתמה וברעיון של הסיפור בשני פרקים ("Anthology of Interest" ו-"Anthology of Interest II"). שם פרופסור פארנסוורת' מציג מכונת "מה אם..." הדומה למכונה של מר אם בסיפור.

רעיון דומה התרחש גם באפיזודה "פנה שמאלה" ("Turn Left"), אפיזודה של 4 פרקים בסדרת הטלוויזיה דוקטור הו.

ניל גיימן כתב סיפור קצר בשם "The Wedding Present" כהקדמה לספר עשן ומראות. בסיפור הזה, זוג מקבל כמתנת חתונה ערמה של גליונות נייר המתארים מה היה יכול לקרות במהלך חייהם אם יוכנסו בהם שינויים מסוימים.

סדרת האנימציה "מה אם" מבית היקום הקולנועי של מארוול, מציגה בכל פרק עלילה לפיה גיבור או גיבורת על סוטים מהמסלול שהוצג בסרטי הייקום הקולנועי ובמקום זאת מתפתחים לישות אחרות, חלקן טובות וחלקן מרושעות.
