העבודה משחררת (בגרמנית: Arbeit macht frei; נהגה: "אַרְבַּיְיט מַאכְט פְרַיְי") היא אִמרה גרמנית שהתנוססה בשערי מספר מחנות ריכוז נאציים, כחלק ממערך התעמולה הנאצית, הטעייה ואחיזת העיניים שהופנתה כלפי קורבנות גרמניה הנאצית.

מקורות הביטוי והשפעתו עד 1933

האמרה הייתה נפוצה בגרסאות שונות בקרב איכרים גרמנים וגרמנים-שווייצרים כחלק ממוסר העבודה הפרוטסטנטי.

מקורו של הביטוי כפי שהיה מוכר בתחילת המאה ה-20, הוא בשמו של רומן משנת 1873 שחיבר הבלשן הגרמני לורנץ דיפנבאך (Lorenz Diefenbach). במשמעותו המקורית שימש הביטוי ברומן לתיאור הדרך שבה עוברים מהמרים ונוכלים תהליך של "חזרה בתשובה", ואימוץ של נורמות מוסריות של יושר, באמצעות עבודה יצרנית היוצרת ערך ותועלת להם ולסביבתם.[1]

במקביל, ניתן לזהות בביטוי יסודות של רעיונות על ערכה של הפרודוקטיביזציה, ועל ערכה של העבודה במשנות הוגי הדעות במאה ה-19 וברעיונות הסוציאליזם. רעיונות שאומצו בין השאר על ידי הוגי הדעות של הציונות הסוציאליסטית. כך למשל, א"ד גורדון פרסם מאמר שכותרתו "בעבודה לקינו ובעבודה נרפא".[2] כותרת מאמרו של גורדון הייתה פרפרזה או התכתבה עם רעיונות מקובלים באירופה לפני מלחמת העולם הראשונה.

בשנת 1920 נעשה שימוש בביטוי גם על ידי הפסיכיאטר והנוירולוג הצרפתי אוגוסט פורל (Auguste-Henri Forel).

בשנת 1922 הונפקו תעודות חבר חתומות, שנשאו את הביטוי, בידי ארגון לאומני–גרמני בווינה שבאוסטריה.

ממשלת רפובליקת ויימאר אימצה את הביטוי בשנת 1928 כמסר מעודד למדיניות העבודות היזומות שנקטה במטרה להפחית את רמת האבטלה בגרמניה שלאחר מלחמת העולם הראשונה.

בתקופת השלטון הנאצי: 1945-1933

עם עלייתם לשלטון ב-1933 השתמשו הנאצים בביטוי כחלק מתעמולה בדבר הפחתת רמת האבטלה העצומה שהתקיימה בגרמניה. המפלגה הנאצית אימצה את הסיסמה כמכשיר לעידוד מדיניות הבנייה המסיבית והעבודות הציבוריות היזומות שהנהיגה לאחר עלותה לשלטון.

כאשר הוקמו מחנות הריכוז ומחנות ההשמדה בגרמניה ובמזרח אירופה, הוצבו באחדים מהם שלטים עם סיסמאות תעמולה והטעיה, שאחת הידועות שבהם הייתה "העבודה משחררת". הסיסמאות היו חלק מהתעמולה ומסכת ההטעיה, שכוונה בין השאר לזרוע תקוות שווא בלב הנכנסים למחנה ההשמדה.[3] השלט המסוגנן יצר רושם כי מדובר במחנה עבודה, גם אם בכפייה, ותמורת עבודתם ישוחררו האסירים ביום מן הימים. בפועל, יותר ממחציתם של המגיעים אל מחנות ההשמדה (נשים, ילדים וגברים) ששעריהם נשאו את הסיסמה, נרצחו זמן קצר לאחר הגעתם אל המחנה.[4]

את הכיתוב ניתן לראות על שערי מחנות הריכוז וההשמדה: דכאו,[5] גרוס-רוזן, זקסנהאוזן, גטו טרזיינשטאט ואושוויץ I.[6]

השלט "העבודה משחררת" שהיה על השער באושוויץ נגנב בידי אלמונים ב-18 בדצמבר 2009, ונמצא לאחר שלושה ימים כשהוא מנוסר לשלושה חלקים.[7] במקומו הוצב שלט חלופי שהיה במחסני המחנה. לאחר מכן שוחזר השלט המקורי והוחזר אל השער.

ב-2014 נעלמה הדלת עליה השלט "העבודה משחררת" משערי מחנה הריכוז דכאו.[8] הדלת הוחלפה ברפליקה. כעבור כשנתיים הדלת נמצאה בנורווגיה והיא הוחזרה למוזאון המחנה, בו מוצגת כיום.[9]
