הטמנת פתקים בכותל המערבי היא מנהג של בקשות כתובות המופנות לבורא עולם, ששמים אותן בחרכים בין אבני הכותל המערבי[1][2].

היסטוריה

פתקים שהונחו בסדקי הכותל

תחילת המנהג של הטמנת פתקים בכותל המערבי המכילים תפילות ובקשות כתובות לאלוהים בסדקי הכותל המערבי התרחשה בראשית המאה ה-18, ונובעת מהמסורת היהודית כי השכינה נמצאת בכותל המערבי.[3] עם זאת, קיימת מחלוקת בשאלה האם מותר על פי ההלכה להכניס פתקי נייר אל סדקי הכותל.[4][5]

בספר "מסעות ירושלים", שנדפס בשנת תרצ"א, מיוחס המנהג לרב חיים בן עטר, שהורה לאדם עני להניח פתק בין אבני הכותל, ובכך לזכות לפרנסה.[6]

כיום

כיום מוטמנים בכותל המערבי מאות אלפי פתקי תפילה או משאלות מדי שנה, על ידי מבקרים בכותל ועל ידי נציגים המקבלים בקשות דרך הקרן למורשת הכותל המערבי[2].

השירותים המקוונים מציעים למבקשים לשלוח את בקשתם בדואר אלקטרוני, פקס או הודעות טקסט ולאחר מכן בקשתם מודפסת ומונחת בכותל.[7] נכון לניסן תשפ"ג, אפריל 2023 נשלחו למעלה מ-83 רבבות של פתקים[8][1].

הפתקים המונחים בכותל כתובים כמעט בכל שפה. אורכם של הפתקים משתנה ממילים ספורות לבקשות ארוכות מאוד. הם נכתבים על מגוון רחב של ניירות, כולל נייר צבעוני, נייר מחברת ועוד.

פינוי הפתקים

פעמיים בשנה - לקראת ראש השנה ולקראת חג הפסח - מפנים רב הכותל ועוזריו את הפתקים שנותרו בכותל, כדי לפנות מקום לפתקים חדשים. מלאכת הפינוי נעשית בעזרת מקלות עץ ולא מתכת, מחמת הזהירות שלא יפגעו אבני הכותל.

כדי לכבד את הפתקים וכדי למנוע בזיון של פתקים שנכתבו בהם דברים קדושים הפתקים נאספים ומועברים לגניזה בבית הקברות היהודי בהר הזיתים.[9][2]

אנשים בולטים שהניחו פתקים בכותל

המסורת של הטמנת פתקים בכותל לא אומצה על ידי הנצרות או דתות אחרות, אך עם זאת מספר אפיפיורים עלו לכותל והטמינו פתקים בין הסדקים. בין האפיפיורים שעלו היה יוחנן פאולוס השני בשנת 2000 ובנדיקטוס השישה עשר בשנת 2008. בפתק שנכתב על ידי יוחנן פאלוס השני נכתבו הדברים הבאים: ”אלוהי אבותינו, אתה בחרת באברהם ובצאצאיו להביא את שמך אל העמים. אנו נעצבים עמוקות על התנהגותם של אלה שלאורך ההיסטוריה גרמו סבל לילדיך אלה ומבקשים את מחילתך. ברצוננו להתחייב לאחווה אמיתית עם אנשי הברית. ירושלים, 26 במרץ 2000”.

מספר אישי ציבור אמריקניים עלו גם הם לכותל והטמינו שם פתקים, ביניהם הילרי קלינטון בשנת 2005[10] והסנאטור ברק אובמה בשנת 2008.[11] הפתק שהטמין אובמה הודלף למעריב (צעד שספג ביקורת רבה הן בישראל והן בארצות הברית[12]), ובעקבות הדליפה המשטרה חקרה את העניין.[13]

ב-22 במאי 2017 הפך הנשיא האמריקאי דונלד טראמפ לנשיא ארצות הברית הראשון שביקר בכותל במהלך תקופת כהונתו,[14] והטמין פתק בין אבני הכותל. גם סגנו של טראמפ, מייק פנס, ביקר בכותל ב-2018 והטמין בו פתק.[15]
