אסתר ג'יין "ג'ני" הוברט לבית טאטל (באנגלית: Esther Jane "Jennie" Hobart‏; 30 באפריל 1849 – 8 בינואר 1941) הייתה אשתו של גארט הוברט, סגן נשיא ארצות הברית בשנים הראשונות של נשיאותו של ויליאם מקינלי. היא שימשה כגברת השנייה של ארצות הברית משנת 1897 ועד מותו של בעלה ב-1899, והייתה פילנתרופית ופעילה קהילתית בניו ג'רזי.

הוברט שימשה לעיתים קרובות כמארחת הבית הלבן מכיוון שהגברת הראשונה, אידה סקסטון מקינלי, סבלה מאפילפסיה ומחלות כרוניות אחרות.

ביוגרפיה

דיוקן של הוברט

הוברט נולדה ב-30 באפריל 1849 בפטרסון, ניו ג'רזי, שם גם גדלה, והייתה בתם של עורך הדין הבולט סוקרטס טאטל ואשתו, ג'יין וינטרס. אמה נפטרה זמן קצר לאחר הלידה, והותירה את גידולה על ידי אמה החורגת, אליזבת וילר טאטל. היא נישאה לגארט הוברט בפטרסון ב-21 ביולי 1869, בתחילת דרכו כעורך דין ופוליטיקאי. נולדו להם ארבעה ילדים, שניים מהם מתו בילדותם. השניים האחרים היו גארט הבן ופאני, שמתה ב-1895.

בשנת 1896, גארט הוברט נבחר לסגן נשיא ארצות הברית לצד ויליאם מקינלי, והמשפחה עברה לוושינגטון הבירה. בתור הגברת השנייה של ארצות הברית, הוברט שימשה לעיתים קרובות כמארחת הבית הלבן מכיוון שהגברת הראשונה, אידה סקסטון מקינלי, סבלה מאפילפסיה ו מחלות כרוניות אחרות. סגן הנשיא הוברט מת מאי-ספיקת לב ב-21 בנובמבר 1899. לאחר מותו, היא חזרה לפטרסון והתערבה בענייני הקהילה. היא הייתה חברה קרובה של גברת מקינלי ומיהרה לבאפלו, ניו יורק, להציע את תמיכתה כשהנשיא מקינלי נרצח בספטמבר 1901.

במהלך תנועת זכות הבחירה לנשים האמריקנית, הוברט מיקמה את עצמה כאנטי סופרג'יסטית באופן מוחלט. היא ארגנה את אגודת ניו ג'רזי המתנגדת לבחירה לנשים וקיימה פגישות קבועות.

הוברט מתה מדלקת ריאות ב-8 בינואר 1941 בהלדון, ניו ג'רזי, שם התגוררה בחווה של בנה, ונקברה בבית הקברות סידר לאן בפטרסון, ניו ג'רזי.

מילוי תפקידיה של מקינלי

כאשר משפחת מקינלי עברה לגור בבית הלבן לאחר השבעתו של הנשיא מקינלי, משפחת הוברט שכרה אחוזה מעבר לכיכר שזכתה לכינוי "הבית הלבן הקטן", רשמית בית בנג'מין אוגל טיילו.[1] הוברט הייתה מבקרת מדי יום את אידה מקינלי שאיתה חלקה ידידות קרובה, ולעיתים קרובות ממלאת את תפקידה.[2] בריאותה הגרועה של גברת מקינלי במהלך השנתיים הראשונות לממשלתו של מקינלי הובילה לכך שהוברט השתלטה על תפקידים רבים השמורים בדרך כלל לגברת הראשונה. הנשיא מקינלי היה משתמש באות שנקבע מראש של החזקת עיתון לפני הוברט כאשר גברת מקינלי עמדה להתעלף, והתריע לה להשתלט על אירוח האורחים.
