Uadi

Un uadi,^[1] ás veces escrito wadi, wad ou ued,^[2]^[3] é un termo de orixe árabe para referirse a un val ou a un río seco polo cal só discorre a auga na tempada de chuvias.

Dito doutro xeito, é un curso intermitente de auga, carcterístico das zonas desérticas ou semidesérticas.^[1]

Etimoloxía

Wadi deriva do árabe clásico وادي wādi (plural ´adiya),^[4] que á súa vez provén da raíz semítica و د ي , relacionada con «sacar, asomar, proxectar de repente», en referencia ás súas augas. En árabe actual o termo máis común para referirse a un río estacional é, porén, shuʿaib (شعيب), xa que wādi pasoou a significar 'val', en xeral. Porén, ambos os termos póden usarse indistintamente.

En España o nome de moitos ríos teñen a forma guad-, especialmente no sur peninsular (Guadalhorce, Guadalquivir, Guadarrama e Guadiana, entre outros); recibiron este nome durante a dominación árabe, e provén da raíz árabe común wādi "val, leito (do río)".^[3]^[5]

En Portugal configurouse como ode- ou odi- e é un prefixo común en moitos hidrónimos do sur do país: Odeleite, Odivelas, Odiana, Odemira, Odivarga, Odiáxere etc.^[6]

Especulouse moito acerca da etimoloxía do río Odiel, na provincia de Huelva; Miguel Asín Palacios e arabistas posteriores defenderon que provén de wad-, porén a evidencia demostrou que procede do latín Urium, como era coñecido na época romana.^[7]

Características

Os leitos secos ou estacionais de ríos, torrentes e arroios son típicos de todas as rexións cálidas e semiáridas ou desérticas do mundo. Hai numerosos ’āwdiya na península Arábiga, no levante mediterráneo e no norte de África. Estes leitos poden ter até máis de cen metros de anchura; xeralmente, só levan auga durante breves tempadas chuviosas —de horas, días ou como moito semanas de duración— que poden ser de periodicidade anual ou esporádicas e impredicíbeis, tanto na época do ano en que ocorren como na pluviosidade.

Nestas rexións, a escasa vexetación é xerófila, espiñenta e de lento crecemento, e está limitada ao contorno dos ’āwdiya. Se no subsolo ou na superficie destes leitos secos se almacena a auga, a vexetación pode ter un carácter máis exuberante e orixinar un tipo de oasis, aínda que a vexetación natural nestes normalmente é substituída por especies domésticas, como a datileira (Phoenix dactylifera), árbores froiteiras, hortalizas e herbas forraxeiras, ás veces plantadas por quens habitan e usufructúan o oasis.
