O abade Pierre-Joseph Bonnaterre, nado contra 1752 en Saint-Geniez-d'Olt (no actual departamento de Aveyron, Mediodía-Pireneos, Francia) e finado na mesma vila o 20 de setembro de 1804, foi un naturalista francés.

Traxectoria

Bonnaterre entrou no seminario de Rodez en 1772 e foi ordenado como presbítero o 22 de febreiro de 1779.

Exerceu como cura na Rouergue (antiga provincia do mediodía francés que se corresponde aproximadamente co actual departamento do Aveyron), e ensinou historia natural en Rodez.

Foi un dos primeiros naturalistas franceses en romper coa escola de Buffon para adoptar o sistema linnenano. Participou na parte ornitolóxica (1790-1792) e ictiolóxica da enciclopedia tituada Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique des trois règnes de la nature.

Bonnaterre contribuíu aos estudos dos mamíferos (e en especial, dos cetáceos), aves, réptiles, anfibios, peixes e insectos.

Tamén se recorda como o primeiro científico que estudou o neno salvaxe Victor de Aveyron (cuxa vida inspirou a François Truffaut no seu filme L'Enfant sauvage.

Bonnaterre identificou preto de 25 novas especies de peixes, e dotou á súa enciclopédica obra con preto de 400 ilustracións.
