Pegaso

Belerofonte e a Quimera (425-420 a. C.)

Na mitoloxía grega Pegaso (en grego Πήγασος) era un cabalo alado.

Pegaso naceu do sangue derramado por Medusa (fillo, por tanto, de Medusa e Poseidón) cando Perseo lle cortou a cabeza. Outra posibilidade era que nacera da terra, fecundada polo sangue de Medusa. A tradición di que naceu nas fontes do Océano, alá no extremo Oeste [1]. Cando naceu, Pegaso levou o raio a Zeus e púxose ó seu servizo.

Era totalmente branco e tiña dúas ás que lle permitían voar; unha característica do seu voo é que cando o realiza, move as patas coma se en realidade estivese correndo polo aire. Segundo as fontes clásicas, Perseo non chegou a voar montando a Pegaso, posto que o facía grazas a unhas sandalias aladas, con todo, moitos artistas renacentistas representárono voando neste cabalo.

Á morte de Pegaso, foi convertido na constelación de Pegasus.

É un dos equinos máis soados da literatura xunto con Rocinante (o cabalo de Don Quijote de la Mancha), Babieca (o de El Cid), Bucéfalo (o de Alexandre Magno) e o cabalo de Troia, entre outros.

Belerofonte

Belerofonte encarna o defecto da excesiva ambición. A lenda conta que a propia Atenea levou a Pegaso ante el, ou que fora Poseidón quen llelo dera ou, incluso, que Belerofonte o capturou cando estaba bebendo na fonte de Pirene. Cando por fin consegue montar a Pegaso, non contento con isto, obrígao a levalo ao Olimpo para converterse nun deus, pero Zeus, molesto pola súa ousadía, envía a un insignificante mosquito que pica no lombo de Pegaso e precipita ao baleiro a Belerofonte. Este non morre, pero queda eivado e condenado a vagar apartado do resto do mundo toda a súa vida recordando a súa gloria pasada.

Segundo outros mitógrafos, Belerofonte, montado sobre Poseidón, logrou matar a Quimera [2] e vencer ás Amazonas. Cando morreu Belerofonte, Pegaso regresou ó Olimpo.

Nun momento determinado, as Piérides retan ás Musas a unha competición de canto no monte Helicón. Foron vencidas e as Musas transformáronnas en distintas aves. Pero o Helicón, enchido de orgullo [3] foi inchando, inchando, ata ameazar con chegar ó Olimpo. Poseidón detivo o problema ordenando a Pegaso que golpeara a montaña. Pegaso así o fixo e Helicón obedeceu, e no lugar onde Pegaso deu o couce naceu a fonte Hipocrene.

Pegaso foi un dos cabalos máis representados no cine, do mesmo xeito que o unicornio, sendo seres extraordinarios que encaixan perfectamente nas películas de fantasía e ficción. Un exemplo é Legend.
