Leontios (Λεόντιος), en galego Leoncio,[1] nado en 660 e finado en 705, foi un emperador bizantino que reinou durante uns poucos anos a finais do século VII. Durante o seu breve reinado (695-698) os bizantinos perderon a súa provincia do norte de África (Cartago), que caeu en mans dos árabes.

Traxectoria

Leoncio fora un xeneral que servira aos emperadores Constantino IV e Xustiniano II. Xustiniano II mandouno encarcerar tras ser derrotado polos árabes en Sebastopolis. Foi liberado en 695 e inmediatamente organizou un golpe de estado que depuxo a Xustiniano II; un emperador que era odiado pola poboación debido á súa dura política fiscal. Leoncio ordenou amputar o nariz a Xustiniano II e desterralo á colonia de Querson situada en Crimea.

O reinado de Leoncio durou escasamente tres anos e foi bastante impopular. O acontecemento máis importante do seu reinado foi a perda do Norte de África que foi conquistada polos árabes entre 697 e 698. Unha frota bizantina enviada a defender a provincia e que foi derrotada, proclamou como emperador ao seu comandante Apsimar. Ao seu regreso a frota depuxo a un Leoncio, que fora incapaz de asentar o seu poder e Apsimar, que tomou o nome de Tiberio III substituíuno como emperador.

Leoncio foi mutilado e encerrado nun convento polo seu sucesor, onde viviu ata 705, cando Xustiniano II recuperou o trono e como vinganza polos sucesos de 695 mandou executalo.
