A Extraliga Eslovaca (en eslovaco: Slovenská Extraliga) é a máxima competición de hóckey sobre xeo en Eslovaquia. En 2009 figuraba na clasificación da IIHF como a quinta liga máis forte de Europa, e no 2012 foi cualificada por The Hockey News como a sexta mellor liga do mundo por detrás da NHL, a KHL, a SHL, a SM-liiga e a Extraliga Checa.[1]

Estrutura da liga

Actualmente a Extraliga Eslovaca está formada por 10 equipos (xa que o HK Orange 20 non xoga todos os partidos) que disputan un total de 57 partidos durante a liga regular. Ao finalizar a liga regular os oito equipos mellor clasificados xogan os play-offs polo título, nos que todas as roldas son xogadas ao mellor de sete encontros. O equipo peor clasificado xoga o play-out para manter a categoría fronte ao campión da 1. liga (a segunda categoría do hóckey sobre xeo eslovaco).

Historia

A Extraliga Eslovaca ten as súas orixes na Liga Checoslovaca. A tempada 1993-94 foi a primeira tempada da competición trala separación administrativa de Checoslovaquia nas actuais repúblicas de Chequia e Eslovaquia o 1 de xaneiro de 1993.

Denominacións

O nome da liga é dado polo seu patrocinador e ten sufrido numerosos trocos ao longo da súa historia:

  • Dende a tempada 1993-94 ata a 1997-98: Extraliga
  • Ata a tempada 2000-01: West Extraliga
  • Na tempada 2001-02: Boss Extraliga
  • Entre a tempada 2002-03 e a 2004-05: ST Extraliga
  • Dende a tempada 2005-06 ata o 16 de xaneiro de 2007: T-Com Extraliga
  • Dende o 16 de xaneiro de 2007 ata a tempada 2011-12: Slovnaft Extraliga
  • Dende a tempada 2011-12: Tipsport extraliga, mentres que as series finais reciben o nome de Slovnaft-Play-Off
