Economía na Antiga Grecia

A economía na Antiga Grecia caracterizábase pola grande importancia da agricultura, acrecentada aínda máis pola pobreza relativa dos campos de cultivo da xeografía de Grecia. A moeda

A técnica de cuñaxe de moedas chegou a Grecia ao redor do ano -550, comezando por cidades comerciais costeiras como Exina ou Atenas. O seu uso foise estendendo e as cidades-estado pronto regularon un monopolio para a creación das mesmas.

As primeiras moedas estaban compostas de electrum (unha aliaxe de ouro e prata) e logo apareceron as de prata pura, que era o metal valioso máis común da rexión. Tracia e Macedonia extraían o metal das minas do monte Pangaion, mentres que Atenas extraíao das minas de Laurio. Máis adiante, a partir do século -V, comezarían tamén a acuñarse moedas menos valiosas, realizadas en bronce.

As moedas máis famosas da antigüidade grega foron os "bufos atenienses", que aínda hoxe se utilizan para ilustrar a moeda de euro que é acuñada en Grecia.

As moedas tiñan varios usos no mundo grego:

  • Servían como diñeiro, para realizar intercambios comerciais, e sendo utilizados polas cidades-estado sobre todo para a contratación de mercenarios e para o pago aos cidadáns polos seus servizos.
  • Eran unha fonte de ingresos. Os estranxeiros tiñan que intercambiar a súa moeda pola local cun tipo de cambio favorable á cidade-estado.
  • Servían como unha forma de almacenar metais preciosos e así poder trasladalos como ben de consumo. Iso explica os descubrimentos de moedas atenienses con altas concentracións de prata a grandes distancias da cidade.
  • Para rematar, a produción de moeda propia supuña para a cidade-estado que a levaba a cabo un certo prestixio fronte á que non era capaz de facelo.
