Segundo o Fondo Monetario Internacional e os libros publicados pola CIA, a economía do Salvador está situada con respecto a América Central no terceiro lugar logo de Costa Rica e Guatemala[3]. O país foi atinxido pola recesión mundial e o PIB contraiuse 3,5% o 2009 pero iniciou unha recuperación o 2010 grazas ó crecemento das exportacións e das remesas do exterior[1].

O Salvador foi o primeiro país a ratificar o Tratado de Libre Comercio entre os Estados Unidos, América Central e República Dominicana o 2006. O tratado, coñecido como DR-CAFTA impulsou as exportacións de alimentos, azucre e etanol, e apoiou o investimento no sector de manufactura de roupas[1].

O seu crecemento foi modesto ata o 2008, e sufriu unha redución de 2,6% o 2009, a causa da recesión mundial e da forte dependencia das exportacións para os Estados Unidos e das remesas de diñeiro feitas polos seus inmigrantes.

O país ten promovido un ambiente de libre comercio e investimentos, e realizou privatizacións nos sectores de telecomunicación, distribución de electricidade, bancos e fundos de pensión[1].
