Eaters of the Dead: The Manuscript of Ibn Fadlan Relating His Experiences with the Northmen in A.D. 922 (máis tarde publicado como The 13th Warrior para corresponderse coa adaptación cinematográfica da novela) é unha novela publicada en 1976 escrita por Michael Crichton. A novela conta a historia de Ahmad ibn Fadlan, un escritor e viaxeiro árabe do século X que escribiu unha crónica das súas viaxes como membro da embaixada do Califato Abasí de Bagdad cun grupo de viquingos que o levan a súa terra do norte.

Crichton explica no apéndice que o libro está baseado en dúas fontes. Os tres primeiros capítulos contan a historia persoal de Ahmad ibn Fadlan e a súa experiencia cos viquingos. O resto do libro baséase na historia de Beowulf.

Adaptación no cine

A novela foi levada á gran pantalla no filme The 13th Warrior (1999), dirixido por John McTiernan e estreado por Walt Disney Pictures a través de Touchstone. O propio Crichton fixo algunha dirección sen acreditar despois de que Disney despedira a McTiernan por varias razóns, entre as cales estaba a incremento desproporcionado dos custos de produción. Antonio Banderas interpretou a Ibn Fadlan. Crichton escribiu que estaba "bastante satisfeito" co filme, malia recibir críticas mixtas e unha mala recepción por parte do público, recadando tan só $62 millóns dos máis de $100 millóns que custou.[2]
