Dryopteris expansa

Dryopteris expansa é unha especie de fento nativo das rexións tépedas frías e subárticas do hemisferio norte, ao sur a gran altura nas montañas de España e Grecia no sur de Europa, a Xapón no leste de Asia, e ao centro de California en América do Norte. A especie foi descrita por primeira vez en Alemaña. Prefire bosques mixtos ou de folla perenne frescos e húmidos e gretas rochosas en ladeiras alpinas, a miúdo crece sobre troncos podrecidos e cepas de árbores e ladeiras rochosas. É característicamente de natureza ribeirega e está especialmente asociado coas beiras dos arroios.

Descrición

Ten un talo robusto, leñoso, rastreiro ou ascendente con frondas grandes de encaixe verde tipicamente de 10-60 cm e raramente de 90 cm de longo. As frondas deltadas son bipinnadas na base, pinnadas cara ao ápice.[1] O rizoma é erecto ou ascendente, a miúdo producindo vástagos. Os soros aparecen centralmente na parte inferior das pinnas. A propagación é por esporas e vexetativamente por división do rizoma.

Confúndese facilmente co Dryopteris dilatata relacionado, que difire nas frondas xeralmente máis pequenas e en que as escamas de cor marrón pálida no talo da fronda son de cor máis uniforme e de cando en cando teñen unha franxa central escura. Tamén difire en citoloxía por ter 2n = 82 cromosomas (164 en D. dilatata). As follas de D. expansa son moi similares ás de D. arguta.

O nome da especie deste fento, expansa, provén do latín expando, que significa "estenderse, separarse, expandirse".
