O Delta III (Delta 8930 segundo a numeración clásica dos foguetes Delta e Delta 3940 segundo a nova numeración) foi o nome dun foguete espacial dos Estados Unidos en servizo ao final da década de 1990 e principios dos 2000.[1][2]

Características

O Delta III debía inaugurar a nova serie 8000 (3000 coa nova numeración) de foguetes Delta. Usaba os maiores aceleradores de propelente sólido usados pola familia Delta (que tamén acabaron usando os Delta II 7920H e Delta II 7925H), os GEM 46 e a etapa superior era crioxénica, alimentada por hidróxeno e oxíxeno líquidos, obtendo maior rendemento. Os dous primeiros intentos de lanzamento fracasaron, mentres que o terceiro foi un éxito. Os problemas de lanzamento, combinado cunha caída do mercado de satélites, deixou ó Delta III sen clientes: a NASA inclinouse por seguir os fiables Delta II, e a USAF decidiuse polo novo Delta IV para cubrir as súas necesidades. O Delta III foi finalmente cancelado.[1][2]
