A climatoloxía é a ciencia que estuda os diferentes climas da Terra e as súas manifestacións.[1] É a rama da xeografía que se ocupa do estudo do clima e do tempo meteorolóxico. Esta disciplina foi desenvolvida polos xeógrafos dende os seus comezos da xeografía, incluso o pai da Xeografía, Eratóstenes de Cyrene, no seu libro "Geographia" dedica un terzo deste á variación global dos climas. Das condicións atmosféricas dependen moitas actividades humanas, dende a agricultura ata un simple paseo polo campo. Por iso fíxose un esforzo inxente por predicir o tempo tanto a curto como a medio prazo.

Cando unha comarca, cidade, ladeira etc., ten un clima diferenciado do clima zonal dicimos que é un topoclima, este caracterízase por estar maiormente afectado polo estado local do resto dos factores xeográficos (xeomorfoloxía, hidrografía etc.). Amais, chamamos microclima ó que non ten divisións inferiores, como o que hai nunha habitación, debaixo dunha árbore ou nunha determinada esquina dunha rúa.

O clima tende a ser regular en períodos de tempo moi longos, incluso xeolóxicos, determinando de gran maneira a evolución do ciclo xeográfico dunha rexión, o que permite o desenvolvemento dunha determinada vexetación e un solo perfectamente equilibrado, solos climáticos. Pero, en períodos de tempo xeolóxicos, o clima tamén cambia de forma natural, os tipos de tempo modificanse e pásase dun clima a outro na mesma zona.

Para estudar un clima é necesaria a observación durante un lapso de tempo longo (mínimo quince anos). As observacións de temperatura, precipitacións, humidade e tipo de tempo recóllense nas estacións meteorolóxicas. Con estes datos se elaboran táboas que se expresan en climogramas.
