Augusto González de Linares, nado en Valle, no concello de Cabuérniga[1] en 1845 e finado en Santander o 1 de maio de 1904, foi un pedagogo cántabro.

Traxectoria

Fixo estudos primeiro na escola municipal e logo nos Escolapios de Villacarriedo e no Instituto de Santander. Fixo a carreira de Ciencias Naturais e Dereito en Valladolid e Madrid (1861-1864). Foi axudante de mineraloxía no Museo de Ciencias Naturais (1867-1869) e substituto na cátedra de Historia Natural do Instituto Cardenal Cisneros, ambos en Madrid. doctor en Ciencias no 1870, no 1872 obtén a cátedra de Historia Natural do Instituto de Albacete, que abandona en breve ó obter a cátedra universitaria de Historia Natural na Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, onde está de agosto do 1872 ata abril de 1875, onde é firme partidario do evolucionismo, que comezaba a facerse un oco en España, e deseñou unha filosofía natural de sentido krausista, escribindo un ensaio de introdución ó estudo da Historia Natural (1973).

Co catedrático de Química orgánica, Laureano Calderón (1847-1894), encabezou unha protesta para a liberdade de cátedra en 1875, contra unha circular do ministro naquel entón. En marzo conseguiron adhesións na Universidade Central madrileña, pasando a ser chamada a "segunda cuestión universitaria", motivo polo que foi apartado da súa cátedra.[2]

No 1876, cofunda a Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE), a instancias de Francisco Giner de los Ríos, e con Gumersindo de Azcárate e Nicolás Salmerón, entre outros. Foi o primeiro secretario dela ata 1880, ensinando Cristalografía e Morfoloxía Natural xunto a Salvador Calderón (1853-1911), e realiza viaxes científicas por Europa, que facilitaron a investigación botánica con Van Thiegen no Museo De Historia Natural de París e outras noutros lugares e outras personalidades científicas do momento.

No 1881, ó gobernar os liberais, volta á súa cátedra, pero na Universidade de Valladolid por estar ocupada a súa praza en Santiago.[3]

Foi comisionado en 1883 para estudar as costas españolas, comezando as investigacións sobre o litoral. No 1884 reincorporouse á actividade docente en Valladolid, participando na promulgación en 1886 do primeiro centro español de bioloxía mariña, a 'Estación Marítima de Zoología y Botánica experimentales'. Ó ano seguinte vai a Italia para estudar a institución correspondente en Nápoles, sendo nomeado á volta director da nova institución, que dirixiría en Santander ata a súa morte.

Na actualidade leva o seu nome un IES en Santander.[4]
