Dante Alighieri

La terza rima (prononcé : [ˈtɛrtsa ˈriːma]) ou tierce rime est une structure rimique particulière des strophes intercalant dans un tercet une rime issue du tercet suivant. Elle est utilisée pour la première fois par le poète italien Dante Alighieri dans son œuvre majeure la Divine Comédie.

Structuration

Contraintes structurelles définissant la terza rima :

  • la rime du premier vers et la rime du dernier n’ont qu'un écho ; la rime des autres vers ont deux échos
  • le nombre de tercets n’est pas limité
  • le dernier vers est toujours isolé
  • le troisième vers d'un tercet est un écho au premier vers
  • le second vers d'un tercet est repris en écho dans le tercet suivant en premier vers

Généralement, les vers sont des hendécasyllabes. Mais il existe une forme hexasyllabique appelée piccola terza rima (petite rime tierce)[1].

Utilisation en français

Histoire

La terza rima, autrement appelée rime tierce, est introduite et utilisée dans la littérature française par le biais de Jean Lemaire de Belges, au début du XVIe siècle. On retrouve cette forme dans son œuvre intitulée : La Concorde des deux langages.

D'autres poètes ont fait usage de cette structure mais cette forme poétique n'est pas très usitée.

Cette structure rimique n'est pas utilisée durant les XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. Elle sera réintroduite par Théophile Gautier, notamment dans son recueil intitulé La Comédie de la mort.

La terza rima se retrouve dans nombre de langues à travers le monde souvent en tant que traduction de la Divine Comédie mais pas seulement.
