Linda Ronstadt[3],[4], née le 15 juillet 1946 à Tucson, dans l'Arizona, est une chanteuse américaine dont la carrière débute vers la fin des années 1960. Elle annonce sa retraite en 2011.
Chanteuse des plus polyvalentes, elle touche au rock, au country rock, à l'opérette, au jazz et aux musiques mexicaines et cadiennes. Au total, elle compte plus de quarante albums, les derniers montrent un retour aux sources avec des ballades de pop-rock. Linda compte huit disques d'or et quatre en platine pour ses albums. Son succès aux États-Unis était tel qu'elle fait six fois la couverture de Time, dont une fois en 1977 avec le morceau Torchy Rock. Trois de ses albums sont classés premiers au Billboard, de même qu'un simple et dix de ses albums sont classés dans les dix premiers du Billboard. Les albums qui ont eu le plus de succès sont What's New (1983) et Cry Like a Rainstorm, How I Like The Wind (1989) avec, pour chacun, plus de trois millions de disques vendus. La compilation Greatest Hits est sa meilleure vente.
Linda Maria Ronstadt est née en 1946 à Tucson, en Arizona[5],[6], d'un père aux racines mexicaines et allemandes[7] et d'une mère née aux États-Unis, dans l'État du Michigan, elle-même d'ascendance néerlandaise, anglaise et germanique[8].
Linda Ronstadt est issue d'une famille de quatre enfants[8]. Son père, qui tient une quincaillerie pendant la journée et chante dans les bars le soir, inculque à ses enfants le goût de la musique. Elle lui rend hommage avec son album Canciones de Mi Padre, enregistré en 1987[7]. Elle est éduquée dans plusieurs écoles catholiques mais souffre de la discipline qui y est imposée[9]. Elle quitte l'école à l'âge de 18 ans[9].
Au printemps 1964, Linda Ronstadt s'installe à Laurel Canyon, quartier hippie et avant-gardiste de Los Angeles et s'associe à Bob Kimmel, déjà coauteur de plusieurs chansons folk avec l'auteur-compositeur Kenny Edwards, chacun étant aussi guitariste[10]. Elle est la chanteuse de ce groupe nommé Stone Poneys, qui signe un contrat avec Nik Venet de Capitol Records et sort trois albums en quinze mois (1967-1968) : The Stone Poneys Album, Evergreen, Volume 2 et Linda Ronstadt, Stone Poneys and Friends, Vol III[11]. Le groupe se fait alors surtout connaître par son hit paru sur le simple Different Drum (que Michael Nesmith. a composé avant de se joindre aux Monkees), qui montera en 13e position sur le Billboard Hot 100. Cette chanson demeurera l'une des plus populaires enregistrées par Linda Ronstadt[12] au cours de sa carrière.
À la rupture du groupe, avant la sortie du troisième album, Kenny Edwards et Linda Ronstadt enregistrent et se produisent ensemble, en tournée, durant une dizaine d'années, à compter du milieu des années 1970.
Quelques quarante ans après la sortie de leur premier album, en 2008, Raven Records lancera une compilation sur ces productions musicales : The Stone Poneys.
Son premier succès en solo est Long Long Time en 1970, une chanson country rock. Linda, qui se montre tôt très éclectique, s'essaye ensuite à plusieurs genres musicaux : rock, country, rhythm and blues, new wave, puis comédie musicale ou opérette, puis opéra et mariachi.
Son album Heart Like a Wheel, sorti en 1974, est classé parmi « les 50 plus grands albums de tous les temps » catégorie « femme qui rock » par Rolling Stone)[13]
Au cours de l'automne 1975, elle a donné des concerts avec Jackson Browne, The Eagles, et Toots and the Maytals[14],[15].
Linda Ronstadt travaille ponctuellement avec d'autres d’artistes, parmi eux Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, J.D. Souther, The Eagles, Andrew Gold, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Nicolette Larson et Elvis Costello, Aaron Neville, et Neil Young. Les principaux succès de Linda Ronstadt sont des chansons provenant d'autres auteurs-compositeurs, tels : Les Sœurs McGarrigle (Heart Like a Wheel), Warren Zevon (Poor Poor Pitiful Me, Hasten Down the Wind), Elvis Costello, J.D. Souther, The Rolling Stones (Tumbling Dice) , Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Everly Brothers, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Little Feat, Neil Young, Roy Orbison (Blue Bayou) et Buddy Holly (It’s So Easy).
En 1974 elle participe au concert de la prison d'état du Tennessee (en) à Nashville avec Johnny Cash.
Elle obtient ses principaux succès sous la houlette du producteur Peter Asher de 1974 à 1980. Ses premiers hits en 1974 sont You're No Good, When Will I Be Loved, Heat Wave, That'll Be the Day et It's So Easy. Son album Heart Like a Wheel (dont la chanson-titre est de la débutante montréalaise Anna McGarrigle) arrive en tête du Billboard en 1974, de même que Simple Dreams en 1977 et Living in the USA en 1978.
En 1980, elle réalise un album new wave avec des chansons d'Elvis Costello et des hits comme Hurt So Bad, How Do I Make You, et I Can't Let Go.
Elle s'adonne aussi au music-hall[5]. De 1980 à 1982, Linda Ronstadt tient sur Broadway le premier rôle féminin (Mabel) dans l'opérette The Pirates of Penzance, de Gilbert et Sullivan (spectacle avec public, offert dans un théâtre en plein air : enregistrement disponible en DVD). En 1983, cette œuvre est portée au cinéma (sans public, disponible sur un autre DVD).
C'est aussi en 1983 que Ronstadt lance What's new ?, dans lequel elle reprend des classiques de la chanson populaire américaine des années 1950, comme I've got a crush on you de George et Ira Gershwin ou What'll I Do d'Irving Berlin. Pour réaliser l'album, Ronstadt s'adjoint les services de l'arrangeur Nelson Riddle, qui avait déjà travaillé avec Frank Sinatra et Ella Fitzgerald. What's new ? sera un des grands succès de la carrière de Ronstadt.
Vers la même époque, la chanteuse suscite une certaine controverse en donnant une série de concerts à Sun City, en Afrique du Sud, alors que ce pays fait l'objet d’un boycott en raison de sa politique raciale. Ronstadt a justifié sa position en déclarant qu'elle n’était pas favorable à l'apartheid, mais que les arts ne devraient pas être liés à des considérations politiques.
Par la suite, Ronstatd lance deux autres albums de reprises, dans la lignée de What's new ? et toujours avec la collaboration de Nelson Riddle : Lush Life, qui sort en 1984 et For Sentimental Reasons, sorti en 1986, après le décès de Riddle.
1986 voit également Ronstadt collaborer avec le compositeur Philip Glass pour l'album Songs from Liquid Days. On peut aussi l'entendre dans l'album Graceland de Paul Simon, avec qui elle chante en duo sur la chanson Under African Skies.
L'année suivante, Ronstadt propose un album de musique folklorique mexicaine, Cancionces de mi Padre (Chansons de mon père), qui figure parmi les albums non anglophone les plus vendus aux États-Unis. Toujours en 1987, Linda Ronstadt enregistre un album en trio vocal avec Dolly Parton et Emmylou Harris. Cet album obtient un Grammy Award. Dix simples issus de ce disque sont classés parmi les 10 meilleures ventes de country rock.
Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl like the wind, sorti en 1989 et dans lequel elle renoue avec l'approche folk-rock de ses débuts, sera aussi un très gros succès aux États-Unis. Après quoi, Ronstadt revient à la musique mexicaine avec Mas Canciones, (D'autres chansons), une suite de son album de 1987.
Toujours aussi polyvalente, Linda Ronstadt enregistre, en 1996, un album de musique destiné aux enfants : Dedicated to the One I Love. Puis, elle renoue avec Parton et Harris. Le trio réalise un second album (Trio 2) en 1999.
En 2002, Ronstadt participe à un autre album collaboratif, cette fois-ci avec la chanteuse cadienneAnn Savoy : Evangeline Made, un disque hommage à la musique cadienne et composé de chansons en français. Les deux chanteuses récidivent avec Adieu False Heart, qui sort en 2006 et dans lequel se mêlent chansons cadienne et musiques plus contemporaines.
En 2011, Ronstadt annonce sa retraite[16]. En août 2013, elle révèle être atteinte de la maladie de Parkinson et ne peut plus du tout chanter[17], a annoncé en août 2013 l'AARP, l'Association américaine de défense des personnes âgées. Dans une interview accordée à l'Association, la chanteuse explique que le diagnostic, qui lui a été communiqué huit mois plus tôt, lui a permis de comprendre pourquoi elle ne pouvait plus émettre une seule note. « Personne ne peut chanter avec la maladie de Parkinson, a-t-elle déclaré au groupe AARP, quels que soient les efforts que vous faites ». AARP précise que la chanteuse de You're No Good et It Doesn't Matter Anymore doit parfois s'aider de cannes pour marcher et qu'elle voyage en chaise roulante[18].
En 2019, Ronstadt fait l'objet d’un documentaire intitulé Linda Ronstadt, the sound of my voice réalisé par le tandem Rob Epstein et Jeffrey Friedman avec la participation de Ronstadt. Le film récapitule la vie et la carrière de la chanteuse.
Elle a aussi défrayé la chronique en raison de certaines liaisons amoureuses éclatantes, notamment avec Jerry Brown, gouverneur de Californie et candidat à la présidence des États-Unis[19], et avec le cinéaste George Lucas[20]. Elle eut également une brève liaison entre 1983 et 1984 avec l'acteur Jim Carrey (de 16 ans son cadet) lorsqu'il n'était encore qu'artiste de stand-up[21].
En 2019, elle compare Donald Trump à Adolf Hitler[22]. Elle a aussi, quelques années auparavant, recommandé sur scène Fahrenheit 9/11, le documentaire anti-Bush de Michael Moore[23].
Outre, notamment, les Grammy reçus le long de sa carrière en 1975, 1976, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1999 [27], Linda Ronstadt a été introduite au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (panthéon du Rock and Roll) en avril 2014[28].
