Risto Lehtonen

Risto Lehtonen (s. 1948 Jyväskylä)[1] on suomalainen yhteiskuntatilastotieteilijä ja Helsingin yliopiston yhteiskuntatilastotieteen professori.

Uran alku

Lehtonen valmistui ylioppilaaksi 1967 Jyväskylän lyseosta. Sen jälkeen hän aloitti yliopisto-opinnot pääaineenaan tilastotiede. Hän valmistui 1976 filosofian maisteriksi ja lisensiaatiksi 1982 Jyväskylän yliopistosta.[1] Tohtoriksi hän väitteli Jyväskylän yliopistossa 1991.[1]

Virkaura

Lehtonen on työskennellyt 1981-1995 Kansaneläkelaitoksessa tutkijana ja tutkimuspäällikkönä.[1][2] Vuosina 1996-2001 hän toimi Tilastokeskuksessa tieteellisenä johtajana sekä Elinolot-tilastoyksikön tilastojohtajana.[2] Sittemmin hän on toiminut osa-aikaisesti Kelan tutkimusprofessorina.[3]

Virastojen lisäksi Risto Lehtonen on toiminut erilaisissa tehtävissä eri yliopistoissa. Hänet nimitettiin 1994 Jyväskylän yliopistoon tilastotieteen dosentiksi ja Helsingin yliopiston sosiaalipolitiikan dosentiksi.[2]

Lehtonen toimi 2001-2005 Jyväskylän yliopiston matematiikan ja tilastotieteen laitoksella survey-metodologian ja tilastotoimen määräaikaisena professorina.[2] Vuosina 2008-2012 hän toimi yhteiskuntatilastotieteen määräaikaisena professorina Helsingin yliopistossa.[1]

Tutkimustyö

Tilastotieteilijänä Lehtosen erityisalueita ovat esimerkiksi pienalue-estimointi, survey-otanta sekä monimutkaisten survey-aineistojen analyysi.[3]

Survey-metodologia tarkoittaa erilaisia empiiris-kvantitatiivisen tutkimuksen menetelmiä, joita käytetään eri tieteenalojen tutkimuksessa.[2] Lisäksi niitä voidaan soveltaa tilastotoimen alalla sekä suunnittelu- ja päätöksentekojärjestelmien apuna valtionhallinnossa, kuntasektorilla ja yritystoiminnassa.[2] Lehtonen on tutkimuksessa erikoistunut survey-metodiikan tilastotieteellisen puoleen. Tilastotieteessä survey-metodologia kattaa osa-alueina mm. otantateorian, puuttuvien tietojen hallinnan menetelmiä, äärellisiä perusjoukkoja koskevat estimointimenetelmät sekä mutkikkaisiin tutkimus- ja otanta-asetelmiin perustuvien aineistojen erilaiset estimointi- ja analyysimenetelmät.[2] Lehtosen aloittaessa professorina Jyväskylässä 2001 hän osallistui yhteistyössä Montrealin yliopiston ja Tilastokeskuksen kanssa toteutettuun survey-metodiikkaan liittyneeseen kansainväliseen tutkimusprojektiin, jossa tutkittiin, kuinka eri rekisterilähteistä saatava lisäinformaatio tuodaan mukaan arviointiprosessiin erilaisten tilastollisten menetelmien avulla.[2]

Otos-perusteista pienalue-estimointia Lehtonen tutki vuosina 2001-2004 EU:n 5. puiteohjelmaan sisältyneen Eurarea-projektin piirissä.[2][3]

Tutkimustoiminnan ohessa professori Lehtonen on osallistunut laajemminkin kansainväliseen tutkimusyhteistyöhön. Hän on toiminut survey-metodiin erikoistuneen balttilais-ukrainalais-pohjoismaisen tilastotieteellisen arviointikomitean jäsenenä.[4]
