Lucky Thompson

Eli "Lucky" Thompson (16. kesäkuuta 1924 Columbia, Etelä-Carolina – 30. heinäkuuta 2005 Seattle) oli yhdysvaltalainen jazzmuusikko. Hän soitti sekä tenori- että sopraanosaksofonia. Hän oli johtavia improvisoijia 1940-luvulta 1960-luvulle. Thompson ajoitti uransa niin, että se yhdisti swing-aikakauden bebop-tyyliin.[1]

Thompson muutti lapsena perheensä kanssa Detroitiin. Valmistuttuaan high schoolista vuonna 1942 hän soitti Erskine Hawkinsin yhtyeessä. Hän muutti New Yorkiin, jossa toimi Lionel Hamptonin big bandin jäsenenä. Tässä roolissa hän oli puolen vuoden ajan. Hän soitti myös Billy Eckstinen varhaisessa, lyhytikäisessä bebopia soittaneessa big bandissa ja liittyi vuonna 1944 Count Basien orkesteriin. Tilapäisesti hän pääsi tuuraamaan Charlie Parkeria Parkerin ja Dizzy Gillespien sekstetissä. Häntä kuullaan myös Parkerin arvostetulla levytyssessiolla Dial Recordsille 28. maaliskuuta 1946.[1]

Thompson kritisoi Yhdysvalloissa levy-yhtiöiden, musiikin kustantajien ja lahjakkuuden etsijöiden kontrollia jazzista. Osittain tämän suhtautumisensa takia Thompson asui vuosina 1957–1962 Pariisissa, jossa hän levytti Martial Solalin kanssa. Hän palasi muutamaksi vuodeksi Yhdysvaltoihin ennen lähtöään Lausanneen, josta hän palasi taas New Yorkiin vuonna 1970. Hän opetti Dartmouth Collegessa vuosina 1973 ja 1974. Pian tämän jälkeen hän jätti uransa musiikissa. Hän asui ystäviensä mukaan jonkin aikaa Manitoulin Islandilla Ontariossa ja Georgiassa ennen suuntaamistaan länteen. 1990-luvulla hän vaelteli kodittomana Seattlessa. Ennen kuolemaansa hän asui tuetusti Washington Center for Comprehensive Rehabilitationissa Seattlessa.[1]

Ehkä jazzbisnekseen kohdistamansa skeptisyyden johdosta Thompson ei juuri levyttänyt kokoonpanon johtajana. Harvoja albumeita, jotka hän julkaisi omalla nimellään, olivat Tricotism (1956) ja Lucky Strikes (1964). Hän levytti muun muassa Dinah Washingtonin (1945), Thelonious Monkin (1952), Miles Davisin (1954), Oscar Pettifordin ja Stan Kentonin (1956) kanssa. Hänen viimeiset levytyksensä ovat vuodelta 1973. Thompsonilla oli poika Daryl ja tytär Jade Thompson-Fredericks.[1]
